Description Second part of the tutorial about the basics of needle tatting. For the Get Crafty Contest (but I really hope it's useful to someone).
First part of the tutorial ->
-------------
I'm not a tatting pro, I learned it from the web. This tutorial shows the very basics of needle tatting, like I use to do it. If you have another method, feel free to tell me, I'm always willing to learn If you have questions on the other hand, I'll try to answer to my best.
It's also my first tutorial. Helpful critiques are welcome.

This looks quite a bit simpler than shuttle tatting. I think it would require less dexterity and you never have to worry about whether the loop "snaps" properly or not. However, is there a way to do two colour tatting where the chain is one colour and the loop is another? Just from reading, it doesn't seem practical to swap the ball thread and the needle thread, unless I haven't thought of something.

Personally, I had trouble understanding shuttle tatting, that's why I prefer the needle. But I suppose, if someone shows you how to do it, it's not easier or more complicated (I just don't know anyone who tats IRL).

Neelde tatting with 2 colors is tricky. There sure are ways, but I didn't explore them yet. Sry, that didn't help

Oh, no. That's fine. I was just wondering if it was possible.

How does it work with the shuttle? You have to cut of a long thread for it, no? It would work this way for needle tatting, I suppose. After you finished your ring/chain and tied the knot, you can swap the thread. It's just not possible if you have the ball on one side.

With a shuttle, you would wind a large amount of thread on the shuttle and hold the ball thread steady. The shuttle is the part that moves, but the ball thread is what winds around the shuttle thread (like the needle), which is why the thread has to "snap". Switching colours is easy b/c a ring is worked upon the shuttle thread with the ball thread hanging loose and unused, but ready to be picked up for the next chain. It's a little like using two balls of thread, only one is wound around a shuttle so that it easily passed through the stitches. And the stitches are worked differently, almost in-side-out.

If you don't mind, I'm going to add Part 1 of this tutorial to the Glossary journal on #Tatting to show how to make chains with a needle. I have a link to a video for shuttle tatting, but nothing for needle tatting.

I doubt I'll ever get how to tat with a shuttle XD

No, I don't mind you adding it to the glossary. I'd even be honored

Actually, I miss-remembered the video link. It wasn't for chains at all. So I've added your tutorial to the front page in the upper right-hand box.
