Description
On the ground as protesters entered Waterfront Park in downtown Portland was a very large cache of signs to choose from if you were unable to make your own. This young lady however created her very own purple, pink and yellow "Get Rid of Bush" sign that blew away any of the mass produced "Stop Torture" or Bring the Troops Home Now" signs. She even colored in little symbols for "No War" and "Peace on Earth" It would be great if everyone made their own signs, it adds a personal touch.Related content

The look on her face is so incredible, and the sign is so sad and beautiful. This is an incredible shot

Who's to say her parents used her? My niece who is only 13 has a mind of her own, keeps up on news (makes jokes about FOX News), and speaks her mind. Of course children don't get the behind the scene news (some of us adults as well) like financial implications and general back alley political deals.

That personal touch really adds to the persons feelings about the war.
She almost looks confused and dismayed in this picture, like she doesn't understand the war, I would have to say many don't understand this war.
Great capture.

That sign is so cool. I like the look on her face, and the contrast between her and the not-in-focus people behind her.
This might seem totally beside the point, but her shoes are lovely.

Wow, why can't I find any protests like these where I live? Lazy jerks. There was a sit-in at a local high school the other day to protest new uniforms, but they chickened out when they saw a cop. It's not illegal; they're just wimps. Anyway, i like the photo, but is there a chance you can get the sign in color? I think it'd be nice to see. But I like it anyway. Poor kid. If things keep up like this, her generation isn't going to have much of a future.

A beautiful capture of the moment. I would have maybe liked a smaller F value, thus adding to the DOF, especially as the photo is in B&W. You are absolutely right about the "signs"... sadly I think that such innocence is usually lost as we grow old. In part, due to things like war. Compliments on the photo!

digitalgrace In reply to TeamBundy [2006-03-31 17:09:33 +0000 UTC]
Thank you so muchβ¦ Unfortunately you are correct that a wider aperture would have made this photo so much better. That guy on the left side of the photo should not have so much focus. I once saw a documentary about James Nachtwey and he would change aperture for every shot depending on what DOF he wanted and he would shoot fast too! I canβt wait till I am that good

rachapunk In reply to digitalgrace [2009-01-06 01:57:21 +0000 UTC]
By the way, I believe there is a photoshop filter that can simulate the dof effect... 'lens blur' I think it is. But you have to do all kinds of masking and effort... and it won't be as good as the real deal

rachapunk In reply to digitalgrace [2009-01-06 01:56:18 +0000 UTC]
I do that
But it can be tricky to do that, AND exposure, AND focus...
I usually max out at 2 at a time, unless I'm doing something nice and slow... like landscapes

It will become a reflex soon: just try to figure how that is done in your cam (i used a Canon 10D the other day, but from that one time, I could not descipher how to change aperture, so maybe it is not so straight forward on the Nikon!) and you'll see that soon enough you'll be checking aperture and speed instantly to get the desired results! Best of success!

dang, i didn't find it in the objective (i assume you meant it is in the objective)! (lol). it took me ages to snap the auto-focus and put it into manual mode! I'll look for it next time i have the cam in my hands! Thanks!
