Description Bipolar disorder is a psychiatric condition defined as recurrent episodes of significant disturbance in mood. These disturbances can occur on a spectrum that ranges from debilitating depression to unbridled mania. Individuals suffering from bipolar disorder typically experience fluid states of mania, hypomania or what is referred to as a mixed state in conjunction with depressive episodes.

It really does suck. I've had a handful of auditory hallucinations, the most recent, and common, include me hearing a person breath very heavily, and the voice of an evil sounding person calling my name menacingly. Very scary. I've gotten paranoid to the point, a few times, that I was far too scared to walk out of my room, and into my hallway. I've also had very minor visual hallucinations having to do with figures hiding in the shadows of a room. The worst part is when no one believes you...

I know what you mean. I'm lucky my doctor believed me, or I probably wouldn't be replying to this comment.

I agree. I'm sick of people using the Bipolar as a synonym for completely insane, or using it to describe someone who is being moody, or simply poking fun at the word. I hate, hate, hate it. I'm sick of mental illness stigma. If those people actually developed and experienced Bipolar Disorder for at least one day, they'd never say crap like that ever again.

i know i have suffered for years. and i wish people like that would use their fame for a good reason to help educate people so that people who suffer get more help and support and are not casted out by "loved ones" because they dont know or understand or things its aweful

i hate it to..... it makes me so sad that people like that ruin it for others and put others in worse places.

Oh, yeah, that reminds me...family is another problem. Family members need to wake up and smell the coffee. They have to realize it's not our faults we act like this. We're the victim. The people we argue with are the victims. With Bipolar Disorder everyone's a victim. But they act as if we can completely control ourselves, 100% of the time.

Yeah. I just don't understand why people in general can't just get along for once.

i agree...... i agree... one hundred percent. and the only way people are going to do it is if people who suffer. or loved ones who help sufferers speak out and educate......

Truly. The general public needs to know more about Bipolar, since they seem to know nothing at all about it, in the first place. Another misconception is that people with Bipolar Disorder have moods that change within seconds or minutes. While that can be true for some people with Bipolar Disorder, that's not too common. Average cycling includes episodes that can last months, or even years. Rapid-cycling includes four, or more, episodes within a one year period of time. Ultra-rapid-cycling has episodes cycling with one a day, or a few days. Ultradian (ultra, ultra, rapid) includes more than one episodes cycling in one day, and rarely within a day or a few days. While a person with a severe form of ultradian might have minute or less swings, it's not too likely. I've had swings like that, however. Although I rarely have swings that quickly.

Somehow I went into a rant there, sorry, lol.

its ok i totally agree. if i ever get popular here i will spread knowledge about more mental diseases... especially bipolar since i do suffer from it and have for years.

That would be nice. Luckily, however, many people here on dA actually do know a bit about mental illnesses, and/or are not judgmental towards disorders and people with them. I truly wish I could educate the morons offline at my school, but they never listen in the first place...

Thank you. I'm not bipolar but I do have an inkling of what it's like - I had a nervous breakdown at the age of 17 which included several manic episodes. It was the most horrifying (but also fascinating) experience of my life - I'm actually working on a graphic novel based on the experience. I feel it's my duty to raise awareness about mental illness in this way - there are hardly any comics on the subject. And I still deal with depression and anxiety every day. (Sometimes I wonder if that's part of being an artist?)

Thank you so much! My brother suffers from bipolar and schizophrenia, and there's a fair chance I might be affected too. One of my friends had the nerve to say that bipolar was just "extreme PMS", and we need more awareness!

Reese-9193 [2009-10-22 23:06:44 +0000 UTC]

I, too, agree we all need to raise awareness for people who are bipolar. My boyfriend is bipolar, and as of now I have yet to experience a manic or depressive episode with him. We just got together not that long ago, but I went into it knowing he was bipolar and with the attitude that I'll always be there for him. He's so sweet, and now that I know how to tell what the signs of the different episodes are, I'll know how to handle it better and how to support him better.
One of my cousins is also bipolar, as is one of my mom's former coworkers, so I know quite a few people who have the disorder.

I'm glad someone made one of these . My mother is Bipolar 1. She wasn't diagnosed until her mid 40s. She's on some pretty nasty medications, but thankfully they are working for her x3. People really need to understand more about the disorder.

Awarness like this needs to be spread. I have both Bipolar disorder and Aspberger's Syndrome. I also suffer depression, anxiety, and OCD, and people always alienated themselves from me because of it. They didn't understand my behavior, and because of it I suffered the brunt of cruel teasing for years. I had bigger problems with socialization back then, but as I've gotten older, I've gotten a little better. I still struggle with problems but I won't give up.

I was lucky. I wasn't misdiagnosed and given the wrong treatment, as so many are tragically. Anyway, awesome job on the series of stamps.
