I'd agree with this idea more if I hadn't seen so many able-bodied people--my parents especially--use it as an excuse to be ableist and deny accessibility.

I am a high functioning autistic who also has clinical depression and possibly schizophrenia, ADHD, and OCD. It was not at all fun being called "retarded" or a "stalker" in middle school because of those traits, it was extremely mentally scarring knowing that people will only know you for being socially awkward and acting strange. Even though I am in high school now, those thoughts still linger in the back of my mind.

I have oppositional defiant disorder.

Once i flipped out and trashed the living room.. then i left.
I sat on the top of the stairs and overheard my mum saying to my sister that its not my fault i have ODD and blah blah.. And now everytime im mad my mum mentions me having ODD.

Im sick of everyone pointing it out.
They dont see me as a person, they see me as an annoying, troubled child.

Thank you for making this stamp

I actually go to a boarding school for teens with learning disorders. I still get bullied here but I know the people that care and see me for who I am, not the public school kids who called me retarded because I couldn't finish my test as fast as they could.

JessamineDiane [2011-10-30 21:05:58 +0000 UTC]

This is sad because I have OCD and many people see me as 'Girl With OCD' rather than 'Jessamine'. I've had to stoop many a relationship because they saw me as the disorders and mental health problems I have rather than the person I am.

On the subject of autism though, I don't actually think that there is anything wrong with that. It just means that the people with it need a little bit of help sometimes were as most others won't and it means that they see the world differently. OCD can make your life hell, as can disorders like depression, autism is a positive thing, or it can be, it depends how you view it.

Sorry for saying it but don't you mean just Aspergers's syndrome? It's a distinctive form of autism.

Captainface In reply to LasciateOgniSperanza [2011-09-27 19:11:46 +0000 UTC]

Yeah..I sorta forgot for a moment there that Asperger's is on the Autism spectrum.

Ironically, this comes after I meant one of the most famous Austitic individuals in the world 2 weeks ago, Temple Grandin.

Not a big deal I just have the tendency to note small mistakes about certain topics. In my country that is called a mierenneuker, in english: antfucker.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

LasciateOgniSperanza In reply to Captainface [2011-10-23 12:15:40 +0000 UTC]

It might be linked to Asperger. People with pdd nos or the classic variant mostly are so picky.

I have several autistic friends that are apart of the Special Education Prorgram at my school and my six-year-old brother is also autistic. People make fun of me for hanging out with them but I don't care. I usually just completely ignore the fact that they're disabled or challenged and have fun with them. The people at my school really need to observe both sides of the hand before shaking it, since they'll never know what's on the other side. This is a great stamp. Thank for posting it.

When I found out I had Aspergers and was moved into support housing and had to tell my friends about it, one of the reactions I got was "Oh no, you poor thing, I'm so sorry" like they thought I was dying or something *rolls eyes* I love this stamp because it shows the world that underneath a disorder is a healthy human being and people should learn to see that instead of trying to change who we are

Couldn't agree more.

I'm far from ashamed of my Asperger Syndrome but I certainly won't declare myself "proud" of it. The only thing I resent more than that is when people use it as an excuse for poor social skills - it's a fairly valid excuse, yes, but my disorder is not a get-out-of-jail-free card.

Anyway, this would go on my page if I were subscribed, but I'm not, so it's going in my faves

Thank you so much I also hate it when people say I act a certain way, feel a certain way, etc just because of my illness. Doesn't work that way, and my feelings shouldn't be invalid just because of my illness, either!
