whatever that is it certainly looks neat... I think the grain adds to the photo. reminds me of some of pink floyd's surreal album artwork/music videos

wellll its not really a real duotone cause they're boring.. what it is, is a curves change on the "dark" und of the graph. Then just under that layer using a hue/saturation "colorize" layer and of course desaturating the original image. I think for the hue saturation I used hue +40 saturation 100% brightness 80% then changed the blend mode to multiply. as for the curves. hmm well that is a tad harder to explain. well it was all on the bottom left side of the graph, and I pulled the curve up one and a bit of those gridlines high, and one over, and then pulled the curve back down to near the bottom of the graph on the next gridline over to the right. hmmm that might be hard to picture.... but yeah that was it I think.. ummm plz

I really, really, love the grainy sky on this, it just goes so absolutely with the big metal.. things. I like their curves, too. But the graininess of the sky is the best thing about this picture.

Wow, great place to shoot some photos! You did great with the composition, and the clouds in the background really adds to the piece, they help bring out the look of the statues!

great as is but, if you add grain, go far... use a solid retro tone or b/w maybe use a washed/destructed border to increase the stucture effect (my point of view - only mine)

Duotone my arse
The harsh grain on this shot is pretty damn cool, really adds a metallic kind of effect to combine in with the cast figures running from foreground to background. Also, makes the clouds alot more apparent and alot more balanced with the rest of the shot. Nice work on that.
Focus is great, the fuller F.O.F. gives a nice comparitive join from metal to cloud.
Sweet shot bro!

cheers bro the grain isn't meant to be so sloppy, but yeah the high compression to keep the filesize to "human levels" really bunched it up, which is a bit of a shame... But yeah its still works overall and doesn't take away too much from the overall aesthetic

I actually think the grain adds to it to be honest. It gives a nice industrial kind of feeling to it, like it's really coarsly man-made or something, just as the statues themselves are
Cheers to compression, and cheers to after-effects!

I think its just the slight loss of definition on the foreground statue that was the only thing that the compression killed... esp the way the grain melded with the grime on the top portion of it... (it was my fav part)

newklear In reply to disguy2k [2004-03-22 13:04:26 +0000 UTC]
Dude, definition is over-rated on duotone anyway If you wanted definition you'd go for an ISO200 with slight white-balance adjustment and then run it through the levels/channels for a few hours and display it in full colour
But, that said, I didn't notice any loss of crispness at the top of the foreground statue, it looked rather well defined to me to be honest.

these are some odd statues next to the yarra river, opposite Southbank in Melbourne. They all have a maritime kinda feel to them. like the statues on the front of old ships
