Hi, referring to the teaching material above, I thought to ask you a mysterious puzzleI cannot find an answer for: see the drawing by Moebius. I do not understand why there is this hard bold zone between light and shadow. It is very often used by comic authors. It is often explained as core shadow and the rest of the shadow being lighter as it gets some reflected light. My guts are telling me that this is not an explanation. How can there be reflected light in this case by Moebius? Hard to imagine.

What are some ways to improve on lightening like from you imagination?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DmitryGrebenkov In reply to Denpa [2013-05-30 14:10:32 +0000 UTC]

Yup. Practice and understand how light works and why, and practice - study - practice.

What is the most effective form of practice? Drawing still life like shining a lamp on a bowl and drawing it? Taking life drawing classes? Or doing master copies of paintings...

main thing is work hard and understand what you are doing. most of the artist that self taught say that it takes 2 years for 10-16 hours a day hard work to become good. everyday. if it is from the very start level.
And all what you listed. simple shapes to understand how to show volume on objects and shading, life drawings to understand the things that you drawing (cos u cant draw from imagination things that you don't know how they look like) and copies to understand how that artist made it and maybe understand his tricks.
