I agree and am sure there were numerous influences for both - certainly Star Trek (the Original Series) was heavily influenced by the movie Forbidden Planet, Star Wars was influenced by both Star Trek and Japanese Samuri movies.
Haven't actually seen Avatar just previews - hoping to rent the DVD this week!

I own the movie on DVD, CD soundtracks to both rock album and Elmer Bernstein score.
Do you think the movie and magazine influenced The Fifth Element and Avatar? James Cameron and Luc Besson are big fans of both sources.
You can tell Avatar has that HM magazine and movie feel as if an issue came to life on the big screen. It has the feel of the magazine and movie with it's exotic worlds, landscapes, weird creatures, sexy unEarthly women, alien breasts, action, feats of strength, being in a new body, adventure and of course appealing to every man's former adolescent brain.
Even Neytiri was like a covergirl or centerfold from HM magazine.

I saw the movie once. It was the most violent, profane, animated films I have ever seen...and I never enjoyed it more!
Also, I dreamed I was on the B-17 with Syd Barret and Hunter S. Thompson, killing zombie airmen. Am I messed up?
