Description
Though always a tough call, crocodiles are probably my favorite reptile. They are such ancient, powerful, beautiful creatures it's hard not to be captivated by them. One can be pedantic about family trees and such, but these aquatic predators really were contemporaries of the dinosaurs.
And while the media, of course, loves the action poses of crocodilians, I'm more fond of them in repose. Like most reptiles, they spend much of their days laying in the sun, digesting meals or waiting for their next one.
A huge, powerful crocodile laying in the sun fills me with an odd sense of joy and delight, perhaps like seeing a very large spring get coiled back. I know, we all know, how fast and strong these beasts can be. For how long will it lay by the river, still as a log? When will it slide into the water, sight unseen? It's the anticipation that's enthralling.

This is some older work, but honestly is my earliest example of how taking my time yields better results. the shading could be better and more dramatic, but the detail is several levels higher than most of my work at the time. A sign that slowing down is often the answer.
