Description
BEST VIEWED FULL SIZE:"They stopped, facing off against the large group of the enemy that had simply sprung out of no-where. Their swords, quick and sharp as they were, would still be little match against so many. But the smoke from the High Priestess' bag was hanging in the air already, twisting with the words that the Prophet was reciting. The air became a thick guaze of clouds, which parted suddenly with the appearance of a giant, dark-winged dragon. The enemy took a step back at last. 'Did you do that?' one asked of the two women. 'Uh huh,' the Priestess smiled. 'What do you call that thing?' another begged, sounding more than a little ready to run. The privateering Prophet responded, 'Backup.'"
Doc's Notes: This is the last two months of work in culmination - pen & ink that is the style (and subjects) I feel I excel at, but haven't had much chance to do in recent years. You can see pencils and poses (my wife: Tamera and her friend Laura) in my scraps section. In the end, despite my experience, I looked to everyone from Virgil Finlay, to Frank Cho, Alex Raymond, & Frazetta for inspiration and guidance when trying to combine patterns to complete this piece. I am very happy with the results, which took about, oh, one billion hours (really, I counted). Original size 11 x 14, on bristol.

I found this in a friend's faves and just have to fave it as well. It's stunning for the detail and the variety of techniques you used to create it. As a non-drawer, I am awe of your skills, and will definitely be looking at your entire gallery.

You are a master artist, I love dragons and clever, strong ladies in pretty costumes, I love the look of these women, a priestess and prophet in the pirate business? What an interesting story, would love to hear it. The dragon is gorgeous, I love dragons, I have the dragon spirit and I sometimes turn into a dragon at night. you did and amazing job on the scales of this dragon, and I love the face and the eye, it looks so realistic! The pirate outfits are fantastic, I particularly like the striped stocking, bodice and hats. I'm rather embarrassed to ask you to take a look at my gallery, my art is sorry compared to yours, although it is colorful.

Stippling? I admire your stamina. That's hard on the wrists (and the eyes, and the brain....). And such careful crosshatching! The range of value you managed is simple amazing!

Oh wow.. I hadn't seen this piece before. I absolutely love it! That is some really amazing detail! I love the women's outfits, and the scales on the dragon. Also, the different techniques you used really help separate each subject, so that they don't blend into each other. I like the way the women are smiling and looking up. Just beautiful.
The only thing that bothers me a little is that the scales on the head of the dragon don't have the same detail that the rest of the body does. They seem a little empty. Other than that I see absolutely no flaws in this, and the time you spent on this piece was well worth it.
Gorgeous.

That is so strange... this was my featured deviation for the longest time, and I always ahve it in my journal... Weird In any case, thanks, and thanks for the FAVE. Yeah, I copped out on the dragon's face; didn't have the guts to do more and "possibly ruin it", but oiverall this is still one of my favorite, and best-selling, pieces...
THANKS

Yeah.... I'm not exactly known to notice every little detail of my environment. I'm sure it's been up on your page, but for some reason I was blind to it until now.
It is a gorgeous piece, and you have every right to be proud of it.

The piece was intended to be a study in b/w techniques. I've been mostly a b/w artist during my career, and I wanted something that really stood out, hopefully even amongst all the rest of the great stuff on dA (a LOT of it color)...
