The slim buck paced up and down before his betrothed quarters. He inhaled deeply and uncomfortably, before he shared a last glance with his guard and best friend - who merely nodded. It was the right thing to do and Odysseus dearly hoped it would all end well and improve their relationship and not, as Vaelerian had threatened, in a divorce.
Vaelerian inhaled again deeply, then nodded back himself, before taking to take the step inside Flurry’s quarters, where he found her resting on a moss bed, apparently busy with the study of some herbs. He felt himself weeze as he opened his mouth, a slight dizzy feeling taking over him, while he cursed to himself that now was not the right moment for this - not in the least! He saw the concern in Flurry’s glance and it angered him. Not her compassion however, but the fact that all he could do apparently was worry and rebuff people.
“Are you…” she began, yet Vaelerian interrupted her with a stern, “I’m fine!” that came out a lot harsher than he wanted to, just making him more angry at himself.
Flurry sat up, her short legs making her look ridiculous as she sat there like a stubby-legged raccoon dog pet but Vaelerian knew that he was even more ridiculous than she could ever be - he knew she blamed herself for their lack of conceiving a fawn. Again. But he also knew that it was likely him to blame, even if he hated to admit it. He couldn’t even do that. He truly was a disgrace. A disgrace to his family. His father. His wife. His kingdom.
“Have you come to give it another try? I’m willing to. Three times is the charm, like the gods high above, they always say, no?” Flurry said gentle as ever, forcing a sad smile for she was not stupid, she knew it wouldn’t happen, no matter how often they’d try.
“No...I’ve come to...I’ve..uhm...come to…” Vaelerian began, when suddenly he saw tears grow within Flurry’s eyes, even if she tried her best to told them back.
“You want a divorce, right? I can’t blame you. I’m a failure to you. I tried so hard, I honed my magic and hoped it would help, but it didn’t. I tried so hard, but I failed you. I understand if you don’t want me any longer.” she said in tears, still doing her best to not sob however.
Vaelerian was stumped, he just stared at the princess with his mouth slightly agape, then he swallowed, “No. Flurry, no! I came to apologise. I...I wasn’t fair to you. I let my anger out on you, while it was all on me. You always were kind to me and gentle, you didn’t deserve the way I treated you, the things I told you...I...wanted to say...I’m sorry.” he found himself saying, his mouth talking straight from his heart, surprising the dark lord himself. Flurry looked up, blinking away her ears quickly and for a moment looking as shocked as Vaelerian himself. “Really?” she breathed. “Yes.” he said sheepishly, “If...you forgive me, that is.”
The short-legged princess smiled and even if her smile was still sad, it was also genuine - maybe for the first time that Vaelerian ever saw it.
“Of course. We are both not who society expects us to be, it’s not our fault, but still we need to struggle and suffer for things we can’t change. I’m not going to hold a grudge for something I knew you never meant.” she spoke gently, her wisdom giving Vaelerian a pang right in the heart, how could he disrespect her like that?
“Thank you.” he said gently, followed by a pause, “I-I was wondering, if maybe I could try making up for my short-coming with a trip to Loch Kerr?” he offered, not able to keep himself from smiling a little, when he saw her light up. “Oh, yes, yes that would be wonderful.” Flurry said, getting up, “Can my sisters come?” Vaelerian paused a moment, he couldn’t say he liked the two younger does, especially Leia was bossy and mouthy and her betrothed was an idiot, yet he still nodded, “Of course!” he said, still the smile strangely stuck to his face when Flurry rushed out with the words, “I’ll send a messenger right away!”
Outside stood Odysseus, a relieved sigh escaping the large guard as he saw Flurry rush out happily. Thank all gods. A first step was taken in the right direction.
