Description
By far, the most asked question I get about my pixels is 'how did you do the fur?' This tutorial tries to explain that in as much detail as possible. It's essentially a more detailed version of normal fur cell shading. There are many examples of pixels where people just scribble the fur, which I've never liked very much as it just looks...scribbly and not realistic at all. Using this method, you show the clumps of fur, and with a few lines in the shapes, show some of the strands.
I use Paint tool SAI's binary tool for pixelling, but any hardΒ pen tool set to 1px size will work the same way.
Any questions? Ask them in the comments here and I'll try to help!

This is very useful! Although I haven't tried much (I was too afraid to), this has given me the courage to try again! Pixelling fur was a task that seemed so daunting until I read your tutorial ^^

Wow your fur shading has really improved, and I didn't think it could get any better ;o; impressive work!
I love the way it's shaded in the tutorial, it doesn't have that uniform netting-like look to it that you sometimes see in some pixel work, which is really neat ^u^Β

oh! honestly, I never see what's right in front of my eyes. There is an option to set layers to multiply mode after all, sorry, should've looked harder before posting....

I've been meaning to give this a try. Thanks for the great guide!
What dimensions do you typically work with for something like this?

The headshot on the tut is 100x100px, which is roughly the size of the head on fullbody 400x400 pixels The biggest pixel I've done with fur was 500x500px, but I recommend starting small to begin with

no prob! If you get bored quickly, it's a good idea to start on something small to practice. The headshot here is 100x100, and took only about 45 mins to do from sketch to completion.
