Description
This is a video tutorial you can watch here:This is a video explaining how I do the eyes on my pony plush. I also use this method for my other plushies that have detailed faces. So if you don't like iron on transfers, you can't paint well at all, and you're terrible at hand-embroidery, this is probably a good method for you!

Hi ! I have tryed printing on felt. The picture itself turned out great, but a lot of fibers got inked in black, on top of and around the picture. Is that normal ?

Yes, I've noticed different printers have varying levels of this. My last printer did it but it was very minimal but my new printer does it more. I just take a small scissor and snip those fibers off since they rest on the top layer of the fabric.

I tried with a razor but not with cisors. I will try this next time, because the razor blades damage the printed picture.

When you iron it then you can wash it but I'd recommend hand wash only.

I've done this on 3 different inkjet printers so it works pretty well. Haven't tried a laser printer yet though.

Do you think it will work with an old canon printer? xD

Most likely. You'll have to try it out.

hey, a silly question but what materials did you use for the plushies? it looks like felt but I can't be sure
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
dollphinwing In reply to cutiemarkadventures [2014-06-11 19:36:26 +0000 UTC]
For the plush itself it's a material called minky generally used for baby blankets. For the eyes when I print them it is felt.

Do you use a special printer for the eyes?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
dollphinwing In reply to CARDI-ology [2014-07-09 20:04:25 +0000 UTC]
No, just an average printer from staples or another store.

Maybe a silly question but what software do you use to scale and flip the eye vectors?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
dollphinwing In reply to myjamjar [2013-08-30 20:47:07 +0000 UTC]
I have photoshop cs5 but you could also use some other software, even ms paint should have those functions.

It does, but it doesn't like vector based art, it turns all the inner eye and around it black

I am making my own pony and this will help out so much. Do you do the same with the cutie mark?

dollphinwing In reply to Snufflesrocks24 [2013-08-17 19:01:32 +0000 UTC]
Depends on the cutie mark, if it's complex I'll use this method. Otherwise I'll just draw or applique it

Question: I'm using DatNaro's eyes, but they won't seem to print small enough. What size do you use for them, or what program do you use to print them and size them?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
dollphinwing In reply to CrescentMoon96 [2013-08-05 01:29:35 +0000 UTC]
I use photoshop, but you can find other programs to re-size the eyes. When I first printed eyes, I printed out several different sizes and chose which one looked best. Then I saved them on my computer so that I always had a reference to re-size other pairs of eyes.

Uhhh, dolphinwing, if say, some pony could draw the eyes on the felt would you need to print it? Just wondering, I'm gonna try my hand at plushies. Even though I don't think my 13 year old brain could be good at it, I'm gonna try anyways. I try to always look on the bright side of everything. So, if it doesn't turn out well, I'm gonna keep trying, and someday I could be GREAT at it!
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
dollphinwing In reply to Pieadao [2013-07-28 04:24:22 +0000 UTC]
You can draw the eyes yes and you won't have to print it. But if you do that I suggest something with a smoother surface. Felt can be difficult to draw on so you could try plain cotton. You could also do the eyes via applique (cut each color and then sew onto the head) but if you're just starting out drawing or painting the eyes would be a better option until you get better

Thanks! That'll probably help alot! I still gotta buy the fabric though. Probably wont be a big deal.

I recommend starting with scrap fabric if you can (maybe cut up some old clothes) that way you don't feel bad about spending money on your practice/prototypes

dollphinwing In reply to xElikathalx [2013-05-22 03:10:34 +0000 UTC]
Sorry to hear that, perhaps it gets wrinkled or your printer is a bit different. When I do it with mine I do get a little black ink over the whole thing but it's very slight and can be rubbed off easily. I'm not sure what's wrong, sorry

xD I have no idea, at first I thought the heads were just dirty but even after cleaning them it still didn't work. Actually it made it worse >.< I might just have to find a different method. But thanks for the reply!

I'm not sure how well these work, I've never tried em before but there is something called Miracle Fabric Sheets which are actually meant to go through an inkjet printer. Either that or just have iron transfers
