"It wasn't supposed to be like this. One second we're all playing some sabacc and shooting the shab- the next second my men are laying lifeless on the cold, hard ground. Did we do something wrong, Captain? Did I do something...?"

"...that's what he told me Hawke. The same kid who had full faith in what we were set out to do on that planet before we landed. How in the HELL do I answer that?" asked the ARC trooper.

"So what did you say?" responded Hawke, knowing once again that his brother was hurting.

"....Nothing. I put my hand on his shoulder, told another trooper to monitor him and I....walked away." Tal slacked in his chair and looked at the floor of his brother's personal quarters.

"Because?" Hawke sat upright in the chair across from him, arm resting on the table.

Tal took a few seconds before he stood up and made for the door. Footsteps heavy and shoulders low, the door parted with Tal turning his head to respond.

"Because I was asking myself the same damn thing." He proceeded to leave the room with the door sealing behind him along with the heavy air for his Commander to deal with.

Hawke waited until the sound of Tal's footsteps faded before he clenched his fist and slammed it on the table, teeth gritted and face grimacing.

"...And how the HELL was I supposed to answer THAT?!"

The war drags on for the 77th, leaving only victims in its wake.

Now this piece take place before the "A Lesson in Tact" piece with Tal and some 212th officers. The characters in question are some 77th troopers who were caught off guard by the sudden coup of the very planetary defense forces (PDF) that they were sent to train in order to combat the CIS- and from the shadows another troubling faction. So yes, this is that clone officer that Tal took under his wing and did a pretty damn good job of training those non-clone PDFs- but just like the Jedi, they were blindsided. Let it also be known that the PDF are armed not only with typical blasters, but also utilize dated projectile weaponry- weaponry that at point blank range can definitely wreck some plastoid. The operations on that planet wouldn't be the only failure that the 77th endure during this long conflict, nor would it be the last.
