Description
This piece is a tribute to the victims of the horrific holocaust that took place in 1994 in the small country of Rwanda, in Central Africa. This genocide was the result of ongoing tensions between the two main ethnic groups in the country, the Hutu and the Tutsi. The Hutu led the killing, which was basic and brutal, mainly committed by the use of machetes and clubs. The genocide went on for 100 days and in that time an estimated 800,000 people were murdered. This tragedy has left thousands of orphaned children, and wiped out 70% of the female population. The background for this picture includes the colors of the new Rwanda flag, changed in 2002. This new flag removes the colors of red and black with connotations of blood spilt and mourning, replacing them with the bright sky blue, yellow and green. The children in this picture represent the souls of those lost, especially the children, who are the face and future of any nation. In creating this piece, the artist desired to capture the feeling of hope. There will always be pain and suffering in this world, but we cannot turn away from the ugly, the unthinkable; we must choose to act, to behave with others in mind beyond our doors, beyond our borders.
