DonSimpson — Hugo Base Lightning Spin

Description This is the version of Lightning Spin that I used for the 2002 Hugo Award bases. It was laser-cut from 1/16-inch stainless steel and sat on the upper surface of an octagonal walnut-wood block, with the standard Hugo rocket on top. The center section of the design is the 2002 World Science Fiction Convention logo, simplified for laser cutting.

Tom Whitmore, who picked me for the job, thinks so too, and has said so on several occasions. And I think so, but then I like almost all my stuff. Of course, in typical artist fashion, I occasionally agonize over how I might have done it better. I looked into having the side panels laser-engraved, but the services I could find were booked way in advance. In retrospect, that might have been less elegant. Well, it's done, and I have my designer's copy of the award on my dresser.
