just out of ceriousity how much would one of your carved coyote skulls cost?
just a simple design with the lower mandible included?

This is amazing.
I drill human bone sometimes for lab testing and I have trouble getting through with a powerdrill, I can't imagine trying to do this. It is so much finer than the corticol bone I drill I cannot imagine how you keep it from cracking.

What do you drill with? I use a _very_ high speed surgical micromotor and burrs designed to shape tooth enamel. This cuts with almost no pressure being applied. Also, years of doing this have given me a feel for the material.

honestly, just a store bought black and decker. Since the pieces I cut are dissolved in acid it doesn't have to be pretty, but it does give me great appreciation for your work.

Well, I can see that you'd have trouble with that. I do hope you have a way to keep from breathing the bone dust; that stuff will clump up in your lungs and bring you grief.

Your gallery is just full of hidden surprizes! I may just have to pass some monetary compensation for a piece of your imagination...

Well, it's my own design. I just make it up as I go along, so each skull I carve is different.

Actually, I've sold all of them. I have a table at a few of the conventions and festivals in my area, where I sell my work. Almost everything in my gallery is sold. And yes, they are all one of a kind.

very cool. how do you make the small holes in the skull?

DonSimpson In reply to roschel [2010-03-17 11:27:47 +0000 UTC]
I have very tiny cutting tools (made for dental work) and a surgical / dental micromotor to rotate them.

Thank you. Read my essay on skull carving [link] and practice carving on scrap bone until you get to where you are confident.
No, I bought this one. But tips are to be found here: [link]

I have many skulls scattered inside and out of several different buildings around my place. Not one of them has any decoration done, because I've always thought that it has never improved any skull I'd seen. You have changed my opinion Sir, and indeed broadened my view.

DonSimpson In reply to PrototypeDept [2010-02-24 04:23:16 +0000 UTC]
Well, I've seen many skulls also, and I don't think any of them _need_ decoration, but there are interesting combinations of skulls and decoration that I've been exploring.
