Description This was basically an excuse to try out Inkscape for producing origami diagrams. I'm quite happy with the program and will definitely be using it for the next full design tutorial I make.

A good bird base tutorial: [link]
My dragon design: [link]

The idea for these prefolds is not brand new. I've seen it used all over the place to make mouths for animal designs by many people. I've never seen anyone credit the idea by itself, so I assume it's considered common knowledge like the various bases.

When I work with thinner paper I sometimes include this feature on my dragon design, so I thought it was worth putting up. If I redo the dragon tutorial in Inkscape at some point I will probably roll this in with it as optional steps.

I am misundrstanding something here, well, I got everything completely fine, just before the last step. Sooo....what sorcery happens there? Also...You keep this or unfold everything and do bird base? I haven't done origami for long and English isn't my biggest strength

Nice diagrams. Yo seem to have got the hang of inkscape pretty well from the start. You've even got the 3D look on the folded pieces. Very nice.

This folding technique of basically adding extra paper to an existing design is known as grafting.
What you're showing here is an edge graft.
You're right, the idea doesn't belong to any one person, but is more of a general design concept. It is however explored in detail in Robert Lang's book Origami Design Secrets.

Inkscape has really sped up the process tremendously for me. Tried out a unicorn tutorial with it this evening and it was ~3hrs vs. almost a whole day doing everything with photos and MS word/paint previously for the dragon.

Thanks for the terminology correction and book reference; I'll have to get a hold of that book at some point, it looks very interesting.

Yes, it's pretty much THE book for Origami Design.
It has all sorts of good stuff including Grafting, Circle Packing and Box Pleating.
