“Sam I… I don’t know…” Michelle bit her lip, unsure.

“Oh come on! Aren’t you even a little curious?” Sam remarked, trying to pique her friend’s interest by shoving the book in her face, “There’s so much stuff in here… I don’t even know where to begin!”

“I mean…” Michelle began, taking another hesitant step closer. Truth be told she was curious, but this whole thing seemed off to her. “So the library didn’t have any record of this thing at all?”

“Yeah, they just let me walk out with it!” She laughed incredulously.

“...What about that book that you were supposed to check out?” Michelle asked, putting her hands on her hips,

“Uh, well…” Sam’s eyes widened in realization, cursing under her breath, “I knew I was forgetting something…”

“Honestly Sam…” Michelle scolded, “You should go back to the library, check that book out and leave this thing right back where you found it.”

“Oh come on, they’re closed by now anyway. I’ll do it in the morning.” Sam waved her off, “As for now though, look at this! A spell for your enemies... “ She read, making Michelle’s eyebrows scrunch together in worry. “I guess this one makes them sick or something?”

“You can’t tell what it does?” Michelle asked, “I thought you said you could read this stuff…”

“I can!” Sam interjected, “It’s just… well, it’s only like… parts of it I guess? I can get the general idea…” Sam told Michelle, not really understanding it herself. “I can certainly tell that the cranky bitch in my morning class wouldn’t like me casting this.” Sam added threateningly.

“Now now, let’s not put a freaking curse on somebody…” Michelle cautioned, channeling her voice of reason.

“Okay, okay, fine… Jeez.” Sam waved her off again, “How about this one?” Sam pointed to a passage within the book, drawing Michelle’s eye. To her though, it still all looked like nonsense. “This one tells you how to summon a… Mumpus? What on Earth is a Mumpus?”

“I don’t know,” Michelle said, “It’s probably not from Earth.”

“Hm, Good point. Maybe something else then.” Sam flitted through the pages, looking, searching for something interesting.

“Oh! Ohhh…. Hehe…” Sam giggled to herself, finding something that may do the trick. Michelle couldn’t help but wonder what she was laughing at.

“How about this one?” She asked, “Looks like this one could help you with Jeremy!”

“Jeremy? R-Really?” At the mention of her crush she immediately turned a little pink.

“Oh, that peaked your interest, didn’t it?” Sam teased, grinning over her shoulder at Michelle.

“No!” Michelle said a little too loud, turning even more pink. “I mean, uh… well…” She looked away, her eyes on her shoes. She tried to not look so interested. “...What does it do exactly?”

Sam’s grin grew even wider. She had her hooked.

“Well, it looks like the spell changes you somehow.” Sam read, her finger tracing the text, “Something about like… becoming what he wants most?” She scratched her head, “I can’t tell exactly, but I think that’s what it’s saying.”

“What he wants most?” Michelle wondered what that meant, “So I’ll get... like, prettier to him or something?” Michelle wasn’t totally against the idea. Being better looking was a good thing, right? She was woefully inexperienced when it came to boys, and had terrible self-confidence to boot. Though there had been boys in high school that she had liked, she had never been in an actual relationship. She often wondered if it was because she wasn’t pretty enough.

Sam could see her friend considering it, so she pressed. “If you wanted to know what he was really into… maybe this would be a good place to start.” Sam wiggled her eyebrows at her friend, gesturing towards the book.
“How about it, hm?” Sam prodded, “It’s just a little fun...”

Michelle nervously clasped her hands together, her pretty green eyes flitting from Sam to the book, then back to Sam, then back to the book, then back to Sam again.
“Well... alright!”
