Description This is the first calf of the season. She is only 10 hours old and was put in the warming shed for a few hours and now is on her way to meet her mom. She went on a bit of a sleigh ride pulled by the 4-wheeler. She didn't seem to mind. She only fell out once and then decided it would be better if she laid down.

Fred was pulling the sleigh with the 4-wheeler. She looked like she was trying to snowboard.

I love it! I know Barb will hesitate or never ask, so take some pictures of your husband working so she can draw your cowboy, ranch hand, husband working on the farm. She has more fun painting a man's hands holding a cup of coffee, and wearing a work shirt than I do painting animals or drawing flowers. For some reason we both have an usuall affinity for cows and calfs. I look forward to seeing more pictures of your stock and your ranch and all the wonders of your daily life. Thanks for sharing I love your pictures. Hugs to you and yours...Annie

Thanks Annie. I will see what I can do; if I can ever get him to stay still long enough. I am happy you enjoy seeing my little part of the world.

She is so cuuuuuute! Thanks so much for sharing this awesomeness with us! What do you mean by "two so far and only 115 more to go" ?

Thanks, I am really tickled that you like her so much. Only 2 calves have been born so far. Things are just getting started, and we have about 115 more cows that are due to have a calf over the next 3 months. Come on up, you can have the 3:00 a.m. check.

dove-51 In reply to AdamsWife [2009-03-18 03:23:28 +0000 UTC]

Some don't seem to care and others get pretty upset. It is funny how different their maternal instincts are. Just like humans that way. The calves aren't away from mom to long. It's only when they are born at night and the temperature is still to cold for them. We put them in a warm shed just long enough to get dried off then back to mom they go.

115 to go that's perfect capitalism for you - have a and double your number in a year

gosh, 115 to go

dove-51 In reply to Cmac13 [2009-03-18 03:02:03 +0000 UTC]

That's actually a small herd. We sell the calves in the fall when they are 450 - 600 lbs. Then they go to a feed lot to get fatter. We usually keep some of the heifers to replace older cows. It's a cycle.
I thinks Fred's record is 11 or 12 calves born in one day.

Your so welcome Kathy. You would have had such a hoot watching him ride along in the sleigh and trying to stand up at the same time.

If you get a chance to take pictures of others babies riding in the sleigh, please let me know. In fact, if you would be willing to send me the originals via email, I would love to digitally paint and draw them. I would love close-up faces the most. My email is klr620@me.com, if you would be willing to do that. I need original size images if possible, or at least larger ones than what we squeeze in here sometimes. Love, Kathy

I don't mind a bit. In fact I would be most flattered. Check out the Country Life part of my gallery. Let me know if there is something from last year that you like. I think there are a couple of calves in the hay.

It is a blast. Fred used to pull the boys on the sleigh behind the snowmobile until they got big enough to want to drive the snowmobile.
