History:

The only daughter of the prosperous Diao clan and the second child of respected general Diao Feng, Ran's early life was a happy and uncomplicated one. She demonstrated an aptitude for scholarly pursuits, and was a precocious reader. In addition, she displayed an interest in martial arts and swordplay - something that her father and older brother eagerly indulged her in.

However, her life took a rather unfortunate turn at the age of 13 when a former ally of the Diao family began a rebellion, assassinating her father and pulling the family into a two year-long war that culminated in them losing most of their fortune. With a family of his own to support and few options, Ran’s older brother Diao Feixiao married her off to Ma Huang, the heir to a wealthy allied family.

This turned out not to be one of Feixiao’s better choices. While the family was saved from potential financial ruin, Ma Huang proved himself to be a disaster of a different sort - a vicious, foul-tempered tyrant of a man that terrorized his wife physically and mentally and reduced her to a shell of her former self. After several years of marriage, a desperate Ran began to build a plan to make her escape.

Around this time, the patriarch of the Ma family perished, leaving Ma Huang in charge. His younger brother Ma Zi had stepped forward to challenge his ability as a leader, and the two brothers began a feud that grew more and more contentious as time passed. Capitalizing on this, Ran began using her servants to feed lies to her husband and brother-in-law, sowing further conflict between them. This eventually culminated in a terrible fight after Ma Zi arrived to confront his brother, and ended in death when Ma Huang murdered his younger brother before dying from his own wounds.

Killing one of her handmaidens and dressing her in her clothes, Ran set the manor on fire before escaping into the countryside. She wandered from place to place until she had a chance meeting in a tavern with a man named Jia Xu, who recognized her from rumors that had circulated about Ma Huang’s recent death. After speaking to him and pleading with him not to out her, she struck up a bargain with him and handed over the few valuables she’d managed to smuggle out of the castle before escaping.

In return, she was brought forward to Cao Cao and granted audience with him to plead for asylum. Realizing the desperate nature of her situation and seeing her potential as a useful figure, he permitted her to stay among his ranks. She remains there to this day, serving as a footsoldier and a scribe and doing what she can to repay her debt to Wei.

Personality:

Diao Ran is a rather aggressive and impulsive woman, and her temper among any officer unlucky enough to get on her bad side is the stuff of legends. She has a sarcastic and often cruel sense of humor, and tends to verbally lash out at others if provoked.

While her dedication to repaying Cao Cao and her loyalty to Wei is unquestionable, her hedonism comes in at a close second to those things; she has a fondness for partying and drinking, and a far more undisciplined- and often vulgar and flirtatious -side reveals itself at every banquet she attends.

While it’s an exceptionally rare sight, she does have a gentler side when it comes to others that she views as vulnerable - or, rarer still, that she has a soft spot for in general.
