Description

The African savannah is not a safe place for any animal, even for large mammals such as elephants and rhinos. In the plains, there is a great monster, twice the height of a bear, with huge and long legs capable of giving them great mobility, and with a huge head like that of a hippopotamus, but designed to kill.

This monstrosity ancestors had as a group of strangers ancestral primitive mammals, maybe related with Arctocyonids , which despite already extinct since the paleogene, this last survivor managed to stay alive in the remote corners of Africa and became into a cryptid creature, designed to bring down large herbivorous mammals, and devour them, just like that poor young adult male elephant that despite weighing nearly 6 tons, it was easily killed by this voracious monster.

This probably could be considered as any Speculative evolution idea about an alternative evolution project where a some differents kind of mammals evolved, but, in part it isn't.

This creature born in the program PaleoWorld in the last minutes of the episode "Valley of the Uglies" in 1997, said by Robert bakker about something is missing.

You can see here what it is
www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Ym2OA… (minute 5:20 to 6:15)
The creature was probably made just to compare, however, there is nothing wrong in speculate about it now

Wait....weren't these just(not just, but niche and morphology wise)dogs trying to be hyenas? Why does this one look like a derived baboon. Or am I remembering my extinct mammal clades wrongly?

No, this is a clade apart of carnivora

Oh yeah, I remember that! I actually drew something similar a few years back. (Back when my art was slightly crappier.) Image1   Might get back to re-drawing it soon.

BTW, this is just my preference, but I'd probably give it digitigrade hind limbs.

I must say about the digitigrade things, I decided to preserve the original design because this is more a fantart rather than and remake of the original creature. It was described as a polar bear with long legs, so it was convenient to make it as a creature with plantigrade hind limb like a bear.

Not exactly a fast runner though.

To be fair, its prey aren't gazelles or something gracile and fast, this creature is probably one of those predators that rely most in force instead of speed, is sure that those long legs give great speed in short runs, however, is not a predator designed for it.

Are you sure?

HUBLERDON In reply to Dragonthunders [2016-05-30 16:40:32 +0000 UTC]

....maybe not, then.

Theres speculation Set's head was based off a previously-unknown animal the Egyptians either knew of firsthand or dug up fossils of.
