what you color it with is less of an issue, so that remains entirely your choice, as does everything really.

the wolf itself may want to have some sort of a pattern, or symbols on it, or perhaps your going for a basic color scheme, as for the background, which is what interest me, the most colorful thing you could do would be a candy land... that obviously bring out of the question, a flower grove/glade would provide many colors, or even just a small bunch of flowers, a wooded area provides darker colors generally speaking, water likes to give yo some more depth with it's reflected colors, often times showing some of the sky the close the water is to you, a field is a bright environment, but oftentimes feels too open, so giving it more of a savanah look might do, deserts can be both very light, and very dark, depending on what you want to portray, but almost always portray death or impending doom, unless you've got an oasis, and an oasis can provide allot of color...

generally speaking though, if what you want/need some color in the background, bugs, flowers, and fruits can provide many of those, as can certain fungus/mushrooms. don't be afraid to play around with some water and mist on a separate piece of paper or new layer on the computer, once you find something you like, throw it in where you want it, just try not to make it too busy, or too dull... your background should be just that, and help to characterize/lead the eye to, the wolf .

what? you asked for detailed...
