Season: Summer

Seasonal Prompt: --

Location: forest, Caputalis Isle

Herd Member(s): Shelly , Stardust , Beetle

Lead Stallion: SunSplaash

Shelly can only roll her eyes with amusement as she watches both Zynnia and SunSplaash disappear within the thick vegetation of the forest. Both Beetle and Stardust had paused, trotting curiously back towards Shelly as they watched the two adults disappear.

Droplets of cold water splashing over Shelly's knees pull her attention back to the foals. They come to a stop in front of her, completely soaked, their eyes wide and curious.

"Yes?" She asks, tilting her head at them.

"Where are they going?"

Shelly practically choked on the question. She hadn't realized they would be curious about the two disappearing, and her mind went completely blank as to what she should say. Obviously, they aren't at the age to explain what's actually going on, but she can't for the life of her come up with a believable lie as to what they could possibly be doing instead.

"U-er, they're uh," Shelly stumbles over her words, feeling her face growing hot as the two foals stare innocently back at her.

"I think they're going on a patrol or something," Silhouette seemingly appears out of nowhere, standing beside Shelly causing the white mare to jump slightly at her arrival. The foals giggle at Shelly's reaction.

"Bird got your tongue?" Rook's raspy voice asks from Silhouette's shoulder, and Shelly glares playfully back at him.

"Oh hush you mangy thing," she teases, flicking her tail. She then looks at Silhouette's face. Having grown into a beautiful young mare herself, the mares had taken her aside to explain the birds and the bees during one of SunSplaash's patrols to save her the embarrassment of it all.

And with the bigger Stardust continues to grow with each passing day, the more Shelly is starting to dread bringing the talk up with her own daughter.

"Ahem. R-right, they've gone off to ah, check for dangers." Shelly nods her affirmative, glancing back at Silhouette. The young mare smiles lopsidedly at the foals, though the embarrassment swimming in her dark eyes betrays her facial expression.

Luckily the foals, being too young to catch on, simply shrug and easily accept the answer. Besides, this isn't the first time SunSplaash has gone surveying the area, so this isn't anything new to them.

"Oh! I was thinking...aunt Shelly...if-well, if you could teach us to swim?" Beetle's excited voice quickly changes the subject.

Shelly raises a brow with amusement, before looking at her daughter, who nods hopefully in response.

"Teach you to swim huh?" Shelly shifts, glancing up in thought, humming as she does so. The two foals squirm under her eyes impatiently waiting for her answer.

"Well, I suppose you are old enough...and you're big enough..." She trails off, slowly looking the two of them over. "You aren't tired from splashing around?"

"No! I promise we're not mama!" Stardust exclaims, her eyes wide. "Pleeease teach us!!"

"I have a feeling that Beetle isn't the best influence to be around," Shelly teases, feigning a stern face towards Beetle. The colt only huffs, rolling his eyes grumpily in response.

Silhouette giggles as she watches them and their impatience. She remembers feeling the exact same way when her mother had taught her how to swim during one late summer evening. She smiles fondly at the memory, a pang of grief twisting in her heart.

"If ya learn, ya gotta watch out for 'gators if you go off to the deep end," Rook pipes up nonchalantly, ruffling his unruly feathers.

"Gators? T-they're in the forest?" Stardust immediately deflates, slowly turning to look over her shoulder back at the deeper part of the pond with a shudder.

"Course there are! It's a saying that reaches over miles, "Where there are toads there's a code! Keep yer eyes peeled for the yellow glow of their eyes! If ya don't see it, well it's too late!"

"Is-is that true!?" Stardust tucks her tail between her legs, her ears lowering as she stares wide-eyed at the raven. "Do-do alligators like toads?"

"They sure do. Where there's toads there's food-"

"Oh come on, you can't actually believe him," Beetle laments, rolling his eyes as he pouts. "It's so lame! He gets you every time!"

"Does not!"

"Hey, sometimes he can actually manage to say something true," Silhouette defends playfully. "That one about the fox was true."

"No, it wasn't," Beetle argues back, pinning his ears.

"Children children," Shelly laughs, shaking her head with amusement. She then looks over at Rook, also giggling away as Stardust glares heatedly back at him for once again falling for his weird, made-up riddles. "Pay no mind to this quipster, he's nothin' but a sparrow, always talkin' but never actually saying anything."

"Hey!"

"Yeah yeah-can you teach us now?" Beetle grumbles, huffing with frustration. Stardust still looks with uncertainty out at the water.

"I suppose I can," Shelly finally gives in. Beetle immediately perks up, a huge smile lighting his eyes as he nudges his half-sister's shoulder. "Hear that Star? She's gonna teach us!!"

"But what about the al-"

"For the last time, there are no alligators!"

Silhouette shakes her head with amusement as she stays at the shoreline, watching as Shelly wades into the water. Beetle is right at her side, following her to the deeper end, with Stardust trailing slowly behind them.

"Kids these days," Rook grumbles, fluffing his feathers with a huff. "Aint got no respect."

"Oh smooth those ruffled feathers," Silhouette chuckles, turning to look at the rest of the herd. Twila is standing closer to the edge of the forest, with Twila shyly at her side, the both of them talking quietly with each other. Neither seemed to have noticed SunSplaash and Zynnia retreating to a more private spot away from the herd.

Silhouette sighs, looking back at where the two had retreated to. Though, with them being gone, and with Shelly being busy with the foals, this gives Silhouette an opportunity that springs to life in her head as she mischievously searches around the trees. Slowly she retreats, backing up towards the vegetation behind her as Rook rants on in her ear about Beetle spoiling his prank.

"Rook shh!" She finally hisses, pinning her ears at the grump on her back. "I'm trying to get us outta here for a little bit."

"Oh yes, I'd like that," Rook brightens, immediately perking up. "It would be good to get away from those sticks in the mud."

Silhouette only rolls her eyes with amusement before allowing the vegetation of the forest to swallow her, completely blocking her from the rest of the herd. She then quickly spins around, with a quiet whinny of excitement, and dashes away into the forest, smiling happily at the warmth of the sun filtering in through the gaps of the canopy above.
