Description Here they are--my custom-maned Pinkie Pie ponies.

Alrighty, so how did this happen? How did I get these two ponies with the custom manes? (incoming wall of text! If you want to avoid extensive reading, scroll down to the yawning face.)

Well, it all started with baiting the ponies. You all know how that works, and there's a handful of methods for doing so. So, suffice to say, the method I used involved beheading...and later reheading. I did not, however, cut out the plastic plug thing for fear of being unable to reattach it, so the nub end of the tail is still in her somewhere.

Next up, I had to take some acetone to the pony head that would be Pinkamena's to give her the angry eyes. Now, at first, I used nail polish remover, thinking that would do the trick. It didn't. Don't get me wrong--nail polish remover did remove some of the half of the eye I was trying to get rid of, but in the end, stuff was still left over. So, I moved up to actual paint thinner...which didn't do anything more than the polish remover had already done. So, I had to move on to the big guns. 100% pure acetone. Little note for anypony who wants to do something similar with their custom ponies: skip the pansy stuff, and save yourself time by just going straight to the acetone. It's a whole lot less of a headache that way. Anyway, using the acetone, I was able to get everything the other two removers left behind in one or two swipes of my paper towel, and it was on to the next step.

Next step was waiting for my manes/tails from *OtakuSquirrel to arrive in the mail.

Once they showed up, it was sanding, cutting, and more sanding to try and get everything smooth and even. (Would have been some filling, since there was a few air-bubble holes, but I didn't have the forethought to buy filler-stuff.)

Then, two days were spent figuring out you can't mix red and purple acrylic paints and get hot pink/magenta! It doesn't work! Throwing white in there only makes it a dull greyish blah; it does nothing to increase vibrance. 'Nother hot tip for you aspiring customers (serendipitous pun), if you want a bright, vibrant color that isn't among the twelve fun colors that came with your "My First Paint Set" kit, mixing those colors will not give you what you want. Save yourself the trouble, and just buy the color.

Anyway, once I bought the color I needed, I painted them, sprayed on a coat of glaze and super-glued them onto the ponies once they'd dried.

Voila!

Here's the tl;dr sum-up:
Making custom-maned-and-tailed ponies is a lot of work, but the payoff is pretty well worth it.
If you want to remove stuff painted on the ponies, use acetone. It works best.
If you want to paint with a bright, vibrant color, you're not gonna get it by mixing paints together. NO MATTER HOW HARD YOU TRY!
Thanks go out to *OtakuSquirrel for making all this possible with his custom-cast, show-accurate My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic manes and tails. If you guys have a collection of ponies, you should totally order some kits for yourself from this guy.

Thanks and not a problem.

Are you planing on making some customs of your own?

No plans myself. But I make a number of crafty items and I find information about the creation process interesting. The paint and acetone suggestions may be useful for some random project in the future.

Thanks. A lot of work was put into these fillies, and it was my first time. So, all in all, not bad I'd say.

Yeah, I had to make these.

Luckily, I had the talented *OtakuSquirrel to sculpt my manes and tails for me.

He sells those things, yaknow.

I have a healthy respect for acetone ever since I accidentally melted a CD and bits of the player with it. Sure cleans flux off of circuit boards, though!

Ah, geez!

Luckily, my luck with acetone was never that bad. Though it did give my hands a chilly sensation...

That's the power of evaporative cooling! It transitions to a vapor at low (i.e. room) temperatures, taking heat away with it!
Also why you should only use it in a well-ventilated area.

Yep! XD But it looks like my order was too far back to make it into his most recent round of resin, so I'll be waiting a while longer. It's okay, especially since I'm hoping to get a Sweetie Belle too. Maybe she'll be available by the time my Pinkie hair is!

I have custom-made Mane 6 ponies that were made this way, and my Pinkie looks close to yours, but yours has a bigger mane. Yours looks more show-accurate, I think, but mine might be a tad less...fragile? *shrug*

I got mine on Ebay, and I had to fight tooth and nail for them and actually negotiate 'under the counter' with the seller when she closed the auction because no one raised it as high as she wanted. Let's just say that after all was said and done, she got her money's worth for the time and effort she spent making them. This fan-made merchandise industry is a CASH COW for anyone interested in trying it on for size, let me tell you. It might take a while to get it right, but there's a huge return.

I agree with that. I tried something, a programmable Rainbow Dash with music/sound capability, but it probably wasn’t loud enough. [link]
Maybe I should give it another try with something a little different.

Drewdini In reply to RoninZylle [2012-05-07 22:03:00 +0000 UTC]

I see.

Are your custom manes made by this fine gentleman right here? That's where I got mine. Tell ya, this guy really strives for show-accuracy, the kits aren't that expensive (round $15 apiece) and he leaves most of the work to you, giving your custom ponies that nice personal touch.

RoninZylle In reply to Drewdini [2012-05-07 22:21:49 +0000 UTC]

The seller made them herself with clay and painted them, or at least that's what she told me. She also repainted each pony's eyes to reflect the way they look in the show, i.e. added more eyelashes to Rarity, made Dash's stick-straight, put the freckles (and hat) on Applejack, etc. etc.

I'm not much for arts-and-craftsy things, myself. I always end up ruining whatever I'm trying to make; I'm too impatient for it (plus kinda a butterfingers). Just not my thing. But for my lack of dexterity and skill, I can appreciate people who can do those kinds of things and how much care is put into it.

Drewdini In reply to RoninZylle [2012-05-07 22:26:27 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it does take a lot of patience to do. But I think it's totally worth it.

Hey, do you have pictures of these ponies in your gallery? I'd like to see.

RoninZylle In reply to Drewdini [2012-05-07 22:40:20 +0000 UTC]

I don't; since it wasn't my work I don't think ethically I could upload it here, even if they do now belong to me.

However, I wouldn't mind e-mailing them.

Drewdini In reply to RoninZylle [2012-05-07 22:41:34 +0000 UTC]

That would work. I'd really like to see.

OtakuSquirrel [2012-05-07 17:38:29 +0000 UTC]

Yay! They look great! It sounds like you had an adventure making the two of them.

Yeah, straight acetone is the way to go-- I'm glad you only did quick swipes though-- I've heard of several people who applied directly and didn't remove it fast enough-- it'll take more than just the paint if done wrong!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Drewdini In reply to OtakuSquirrel [2012-05-07 17:55:45 +0000 UTC]

Quite an adventure, and a learning experience to boot.

Yeah, one of the worries with this thing was fading the pigment of the plastic itself. Luckily, the nail polish remover and paint thinner, which I did scrub with, didn't have enough strength in them to do any damage, and the acetone, well I didn't need to scrub with that anyway.

Wait...am I to assume you actually read through all of that? for you!

OtakuSquirrel In reply to Drewdini [2012-05-07 22:02:23 +0000 UTC]
