Click "Download" for full-size, or I'll tell Electrode to use Explosion! This is a picture many months in the making that I made for a good friend of mine from college. He's a big fan of Voltorb and Electrode, and he wanted me to draw him a picture to go with his collection of French Voltorb TCG cards. Since he was a Biology major, I thought it might be fitting to go with a theme of French and biology, so I made a picture based on Jean-Baptiste Lamarck. If you are not familiar with Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, he was one of the forefathers of evolutionary biology. He hypothesized that organisms evolved willingly in order to solve problems; for example, he believed that the first giraffes obtained their long necks by stretching their necks in order to reach the leaves in tall trees. Lamarck was, of course, wrong, but his ideas on evolution were revolutionary for their time. Charles Darwin and Gregory Mendel are often viewed as the fathers of modern evolutionary biology, but Jean-Baptiste Lamarck was an important (if misguided) figure in the history of evolutionary biology prior to Darwin's theory of natural selection.
Here, Lamarck (in the form of an anthropomorphic Voltorb), explains to us his idea for how evolution works. He suggests that Voltorb evolve into Electrode by trying every day to raise their perpetually frowning eyebrows. The English translation of the text is as follows:
"Regard how evolution comes to be realized! Take the Voltorb. By habit it frowns, but sometimes it wishes it could raise its eyebrows. If the Voltorb tries to raise them every day, I believe that one day it will become an Electrode!"
Yes those are Roserade flowers on his tea cup.
