Description Okay, I got bored and thought I would post a tutorial on how to tie a pan cheng, or mystic knot. If you've ever been in a Chinese restaurant, you have seen these knots tied using red cord hanging on most of the walls, or at least near the doors.

Finished knot can be seen here: [link]

Picture 1:
Begin by putting the middle of your cord at point A (I have a loop made with a double connection knot, so my double connection is at point A.
Loop the cord around points B, C, D, E, and F. Use two points at E/F in order to make the corner easier to deal with.
From F to G go under, over, under, over.
From G to H go over, under, over, under. (I advise using two points at H, to make the turn a little broader. I added a second point in Picture 2)
From H to I go under, over, under, over.
From I to J go over, under, over, under.
J is simply there to hold the end of the cord out of the way until time to tighten the knot.

Picture 2:
(Add a second point at A, I forgot to do this until picture 3. It makes things much easier)
Take the other end of your cord and run it from Point A to K, going over all vertical cords.
From K to L go under all cords
From L to M go over all cords.
From M to N go under all cords.

Picture 3:
Round the corner at N/O
From O to P go under, over, over, over, under, over, over, over.
From P to Q go under, under, over, under, under, under, over, under.
From G to R go under, over, over, over, under, over, over, over.
From R to S go under, under, over, under, under, under, over, under.
Pull at the white circles to tighten. (Bottom right white circle refers to both J and S).

Picture 4:
In my opinion tightening the knot into the look you want is the hardest part. Just keep playing with it until you achieve the look you want. I labeled the points that you pulled on in the previous picture so that you can see where they are on the knot. It is not unusual for large loops to be left at each of these points.

Hope that this tutorial is fairly straightforward, and that somebody out there is able to get some use out of it sometime.

It is just a decorative knot. If you are of a Buddhist persuasion, it is representative of the intertwining of wisdom and compassion, otherwise it is often used as a good luck charm. These are pretty commonly seen in automobiles (I doubt I've ever been in a Chinese car that did not have one hanging from the mirror) as a charm to keep yourself out of a wreck.
