This looks cool! I especially like his flukes, they're very well shaped. I think the pectoral fins could use a little more work though, their shape seems a bit off to me.

I'll post more pics in the near future so you can see his flukes from different angles

Oh it's your model! I didn't know that. I've seen it on Tumblr, and as said, I really like it However, also when I saw it on tumblr, I feel the pectoral fin shape should be a bit different. They are more elongated, and with quite a peculiar shape (a swell as some bumps from the bones inside):Β strawberryisle.org/sites/defauβ¦

It's easy enough to actually change the pectoral if/when desired now that the model is rigged, too Β

Ooohh look at that, they have much more rounded pectoral fins indeed! Especially Tilikum. How interesting. I've been having the pecs of Norwegian orcas in mind (I recently did an illustration of them); they have quite well-shaped pectoral fins: bull one and bull two . Idunno, they seem less square to me than the pecs of Ulises and Tilikum, more elongated. Maybe there is a difference in pec shape between populations? Or maybe it's just down to size and individual variation

namu, have you studied Keiko's pecs? He is also a Norwegian orca, but I think maybe he had fat pecs too? Also, isn't Tilikum a Norway orca?

Both Tilikum and Keiko were captured from Icelandic waters. To my knowledge, no Norwegian killer whale has even been held in captivity (except for Morgan)

That is true, but I keep thinking Keiko is actually a Norway whale--is this not where he swam to when he died? He seemed to know exactly where he was going--either that or he actually followed a pod there before striking out to the coast on his own. There are several pods that go between Norway and Iceland as recorded by the Scottish Orca website: scottish-orca.tumblr.com/north⦠(This pod in particular travels between the UK and Iceland, but I think I've seen others recorded between Norway-Iceland. I'll have to locate them, if you want).

Ah, well, I wouldn't know to speculate on that. Now that you mention it, I remember reading about those pods that travel between Iceland and Norway - however, wouldn't that make them 'Atlantic' whales, not belonging to either country? Either way I do not think that Keiko ending up in Norway is any indication of his origins. There are a million different ways in which he could have ended up there, and no one was with him on his journey, so we don't know how or why he swam the way the swam.Β

I'm actually curious about this, and maybe you know the answer. Everyone says Keiko traveled alone, but I thought they didn't bother to physically go after him when he took off for that month? Yes, he showed up alone and he seemingly left alone, but between the book and documentary I don't remember them explaining how they knew he was alone the whole time, or if that was just an impression.
I do recall it seems more than extremely likely Keiko came from a herring-eating group, so I guess maybe they're residents, but there is a pod in Scotland that are considered residents and they eat mainly minke whales and other dolphins. Anyway, I'm not sure if I ever read how Tilikum reacted to fish when they first tried feeding him, or if another orca showed him to eat the fish offered.
