Description This is my first tutorial for Apophysis, on and all about Gnarls. This tutorial will show you how to make the basic Gnarl, as well as several other forms and shapes of Gnarl, for you to be able to learn this complex technique yourself.

You will need the plugin Waves2 for this tutorial, the link is provided in the PDF.

If you use this tutorial, please add a link back here in the artist's comments, as well as drop a line here, i would love to see what you made.

This is an OUTSTANDING tutorial. Teachers in public schools could learn a thing or two from you. I absolutely love your emphasis on learning how to Β Β create your own gnarls rather than simply saying "put in this value, now this one too". You rock.
This is my result after studying your tut for a couple hours:Β

Excellent tutorial! Thank you for explaining what everything does and how it effects the fractal as a whole. I used this as a base for this: [link]

Thank you for your tutorial. I didn't get the end of step 3 where you could type in numbers for gnarl 3-6, I only got black pictures. But the rest was very easy to understand and reproduce. I had a lot of fun with it and this is my result: [link]

I finally got around to making something with your great tutorial. And I mean it's great. Very easy to understand and follow.

Here's what I came up with on the first shot: [link]

I'll be making more for sure!

Very nice job on the gnarl! I love the subtle colors against the grey background, it all works very well! And thanks for featuring it in your weekly tutorial! It is truly an honor.

And sorry about the delay, I havent been online much the last few days.

I've downloaded the plugin pack, but, I am totally unable to open .dll files. Any help will be appreciated.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Drummerboy08 In reply to kc267267 [2011-03-09 21:21:49 +0000 UTC]

It's because you don't physically use the .dll files. Assuming you use 7X, you need to create a folder labeled "plugins"(or if you use the 3D hack "plugins3D) in the main Apo directory and drop the ones you wish to use in that folder. Then when you open Apo next the plugins should be ready to go just as another function in the transform window.

Great tutoril! Now I'm hooked on Gnarls because of you!
Very comprehensive. I think it's great how you covered the Variables tab so much. That was one tab that I often overlooked in the beginning. Yet it is so necessary for this tutorial. Now I try to use plugins that have more variables. More things to tinker with!
I like .pdf's too. Thank you very much for making and sharing this excellent resource.
PS- I've managed to make a few including My Wave , and I have dozens of saves still yet to explore!

You're very welcome, and im glad you like it so much. My intent was for this to help show how a gnarl is made and how to make it your own, rather than just a step-by-step guide to a single fractal(after all, couldnt you accomplish the same this with parameters?) And especially for Gnarls, the variables tab is a critical part but can be changed in so many ways. For other fractals, the variables tab can make or break the fractal as well, but not all of them give the same freedom as a Gnarl. I hope you continue to have fun with Gnarls, they really are a fun thing to explore!

Your intent is great. And you encourage self-directed exploration. The best kind of tutorial!
I'm having a blast with Gnarls!
Did you know t3 SPS=0.17 _case=3 and t3 post scaled up 6 times @ 125 makes a Slinky Gnarl! I made one called All Gnarls go to Heaven !
Thanks again!

Well thank you, its always more productive to do than to simply follow. As for the plugin, i do not think i have heard of that one before, but i have made a similar Gnarl using Crackle with some crazy variables and triangle shapes at [link]

I tried it yesterday and finished the "playing" around and fiddling with the parameters in the 3rd Xform.
I want to take a look at it again and if am still pleased, will render it and dedicate it to you, Iwona, (another of my great fractal idols) and Stan.

For some reason I cant open the tutorial, something about .rar files.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Drummerboy08 In reply to jager-fiend [2010-02-23 21:17:08 +0000 UTC]

yes, you need a program to open the file(compressed archives are the only way to post whole folders on DA and most other places on the internet) you can download a freeware program called Peazip at [link] just install it and then you can open the .rar like a regular folder, and the tut and a flame file are inside
