I like the style of this.
You colored it nicely and

Thanks!
I just checked out your gallery.
Some very cool stuff in there, especially the freaking wacky snail.
Well done!

Wow. You, my friend, have a fantastic style.
Normaly Iยดm not really in that kind of stuff, but this one literally rocks my socks.
The colours, the composition - I love it.
And somehow the idea of painting a whole series of men wearing hats, crying amuses me to no end.

The subtle amount of canvas texture on this piece really gives it a lot of depth. You can see the brushstrokes, and somehow that gives it a lot of character. I like the stylized approach you've taken, with the heavy black lines and solid colors. The entire picture has a unified flow - one element leads fluidly into the next. The lines in the background frame the face really nicely, and draw the eye directly to it. For some obscure reason, I really love the eyebrows, the way they curve around the eyes. The tiny tear on the cheek is a nice touch. The entire image has a touch of the surreal abstract while still being firmly rooted to reality, which is always a hard thing to do.
I can't really see anything to critique. Kudos to you!

Thank you so much.
Your thorough critique is greatly appreciated.
These sorts of comments are very few and far between on DA (from my experience) so thank you so, so much.
I have a Toronto show in January coming up featuring the work I showed you, and I`m a little nervous about it, so I`m glad you like it!
Thanks again,
Darrin

You're very welcome!
They are indeed. Hence the reason I'm trying to give constructive comments ^^
I'm sure you'll paste the art show with flying colors! It is an amazing piece you're featuring!

I'm well impressed by this - the concept and the reasoning behind it, and of course, the painting itself!
The clever use of bright primary (ok, and secondary) colours works brilliantly for contrast, and for keeping the viewers eye entertained.
I love the stylistic way you've painted his eyes and body - really makes this stand out as being a political commentary, not an emotive piece.
It does remind me vaguely of a couple of pieces in an art book of the last century I have - but since I can't even think which pieces, I'm inclined to think that doesn't matter too much!
The colourful stripes at the back are a little reminiscent of a piece out of Dorian Grey (Oscar Wilde) - aquires a small book, it is rather rebellious for his time and place, and he absaloutely loves it and abides by it in many ways - and in such love for the book, manages to aquire it in many different coloured editions...
Anyways, I am highly impressed with this! I'll be in touch after the deadline.

Thanks so much, Shedara!
That's the most thorough response I've had yet on Deviant art.
I really appreciate your insightful comments.
I've never thought of the background as books, but I quite like that idea.
My place is overflowing with boks, and I work at a used bookstore in toronto!
Very keen of you!
I'm looking forward to seeing more of your pieces, as well.

Not at all I think it's very easy for most users of devart to fall into the mode of saying "nice" or "cool" or
on a piece, and not really thinking about why they like it, what draws them in. And of course, it's a downward spiral - because once one does it, everyone does it. Since just after I joined DA, I've fought against that, because I want to know WHY!
Thanks for your encouragement
