First off, let me just say that this was a BLAST to shoot. I'd never done anything like it before. The shot is comprised of numerous individual pictures taken within a 30 minute period.

To achive this effect, I first focused on shooting the field. In the darkness before sunrise, we used huge flashlights to light-paint the whole field during six 30-second exposures. (Each exposure focused on a different part of the field)

Next, I waited for the sun to come up a little, then shot a 9-stop HDR. Out of those exposures, I used only 2 for this sky effect.

In photoshop, I took all the shots from that morning and overlaid them using various blending modes and plenty of feathered masks. I think it's worth noting that this picture is very natural. I never once used photoshop to adjust the exposure or saturation of this photo. What you see is the result of different images each with parts that are correctly exposed and each with huge dark spots. These are later combined to create one properly lit photograph. All the colors are real. Just as they were in the camera. A slight levels adjustment was all that I added in photoshop.
