The explosion is what woke him back up.
Cade squeaked loudly, the dog flailing his arms, rolling violently off the cot onto the hard backed grass below as the tent shook, screams rising around him. He groaned softly, rolling on the ground in pain, hissing softly in the rising pain in his gut as screams surrounded the tent he was in.
He could hear it… the screams of the engines.. The sounds of machine guns blasting. It was really close now, the screaming engine atop of him.
Holes ripped through the tent, the dog covering his head on the ground as a line of large holes ripped straight across the tank. He cursed softly to himself, quickly staggering to his feet and diving through the flaps off the tent as a much large explosion rocked the camp, a fireball arching into the sky as Cade’s head turned to it, eye widening at the rapidly climbing ball of fire and smoke.
There he saw it.
The Dark green and bright yellow of a rapidly climbing BF 109, Cutting through the sky back towards the camp as other BFs fly by, strafing the camp as they did so. Cade grunted, turning to run as his boots dug into the mud and grass, wincing at the pain in his gut still as he weaved through the camp.
“CADE!” Screamed a young, familiar voice as his head whipped to the voice. Connor motioned for him to follow, the Gazelle standing in a wide space as other furries raced by him, some running, some trying to take pot shots at the passing aircraft.
“CONNOR, GO. FUCKING GO KID” exclaimed Cade, motioning with a arm for him to run, to book it, to get the fuck out of dodge. His ears perked at the increasing sound of a airplane engine, his head turning slightly, noticing the 109 lined up down the path, straight at Connor. “FUCKING GO” He screamed as Connor turned to the sound. Cades boots dug once more into the mud, racing to the kid as he stood their, fear evident upon his face.
He never stood a chance.
The guns of the 109 opened up, bullets strafing the ground. Furries fell, arms and legs gone, heads exploding into a shower of gore, bodies collapsing. Cade was almost there, a few more steps and he could get to him. Than Connors head disappeared. A shower of flesh, muscle, and bone flew out from where it once was as the rest of his body collapsed into a heap , blood pooling against the grass as Cade screamed. He collapsed forward, crying out, screaming his name, watching his blood flow with others, mixing and soaking into the grass as he loudly sobbed.
A pair of hooves grabbed at him, yanking him up and pushing him as other furries raced by, jumping, or sometimes even stepping on, the bodies in front of them. He softly gasped, his eyes drifting over the blood soaked body of Connor before the mass pushed him. He was pushed along with them, jumping down a side path as more screams filled the air, another strafing run, another group of furries dead. He gasped softly, paw clenching at his chest as he looked up, staring at the sky for a few seconds before a pair of rough paws grabbed at him.
“CADE! CADE, Come on man, lets fucking move” scathed a voice, the dogs falling back down onto a familiar face, Darnel grabbing at his jacket collar.
“He’s dead man, Connor.. He fucking never stood ah chance” he said, his tears forming again, rolling down his face as the shark growled.
“We’re gonna fucking join him if we fucking don't move, we can mourn later, we need to get to the tree line” he growled. Cades head softly nodded, arm coming up to his eyes, wiping them down softly as he wheezed.
“Ri-Right, where the gi-girls” he stammered out, pushing himself out of the sharks grasp, wiping the tears and mucus off his face.
“Treeline, they bolted at the first strafe. The triplets are down, they were near the fuel depot-”Darnel started to say, another explosion sounding as a 109 smashed into the earth in the middle of the camp, the victim of a well place browning shot,”- when it fucking went up, so we’re assuming they’re dead” he finished saying, the pair moving quickly form the spot, the remaining planes now buzzing with more vengeance for their fallen comrade.
“What about thah chain of command?’ Cade asked as they ducked through a tent, bodies strewn about it, having never stood a chance from the bullets that had pierced the tent.
“Fucking dead I think, No one's seen anyone higher than a CO. Pretty sure their tent got hit first” Darnel answered as they quickly exited the tent, weaving through furries and bodies.
“What about other COs, like Jack?” Cade asked, not really wanting to know the answer, especially when Darnells face fell even more.
“Jacks dead, gunned down in front of Isah, she’s not taking it well, Kay had to drag her back into the treeline when he fell” he stated, grumbling as they continued to weave and run, as fast as their legs could take them when they could. The trees along the edges of the cmap grew taller and taller, the screams this far to the edge less so, with most being dead, hiding, wounded, or running to other parts of the forest. “Move man, we’re almost there” exclaimed as the two booked it. The scream of a engine could be heard behind them, the ground they were just on being showered in lead, a pair of soldiers behind them disappearing into a dust cloud filled with lead, their bodies falling to the ground.
The pair burst through the bushes, landing in a heap under the shade and safety of the large trees above them as they loudly groaned. Cade spat out mud and grass, groaning at the taste of it on his, wiping his tongue on the collar of his jacket before grunting, rolling himself onto his back, staring up at the tree canopy. A loud whooping came from the tree line, another 109 trailing away from the group, smoke trailing from it as it disappeared over the horizon.
The other 109s took that as a clue, peeling away from the burning camp, shots from ground based weapons following them as the plans turned back East, leaving a camp of death below them as Cade sighed, closing his eyes and taking a weak breath before slowing opening his eyes again, carefully sitting up as Darnel coughed near him, groaning softly in fresh pain as he pushed himself against a tree trunk, weakly smiling.
“Smash and burn, typical fucking Germans” he coughed, hissing softly in pain as Cade gave a grunt in response.
“Kay is probably losing her goddamn mind right ah bout now” Cade said, the cries of wounded coming from camp as fellow Soldiers tried to help the best he could with the limited supplies still left. Cade sighed softly as he slowly rose up, leaning against the tree as he groaned audibly.
“Probably, Girl has a crush on you something obvious” wheezed Darnel, earning a glare from the dog as he huffed.
“That's ah damn lie and you know it” Cade said disagreeing, raising an eyebrow at the statement. Darnell softly chuckled, groaning softly mid chuckle at the pain in his body ramped up a notch.
“Sure Cade, keep lying to yourself about it. Kay likes all her crew, but you, she has a thing for. We all have seen the way she looks at you sometimes” stated Darnel with a cough, grunting as Cade grabbed at his paw, yanking him up.
“Whatever Nelly, keep putting out yah bullshit. Come on, we got tah check thah others, ah need tah make sure we ain’t lose anyone else.. Ah don’t think ah could deal with another death”. Muttured Cade softly as a paw reached down, grabbing out Darnels and lifting him back up to his boots, the shark grunting at the flaring of pain in his knees and legs.
“Sure Cade, sure man” he said grunting, struggling to walk a bit, leaning up against Cade, his arm being draped over the dogs shoulder as he helped him walk forward, through the brushes and trees, towards what they hoped would be other survivors. Their boots scraped against the muck of the forest floor, scraping up mud, leaves, twigs, and everything between as they slowly continued walking. The pair continued their slow walking grunting over the rough terrain before Cade gave a much louder grunt than before, lowering his buddy against a tree before collapsing against it, hissing through his teeth as his paw gripped at his lower gut.
“You okay brother?’ asked Darnell, Cade shaking his head as he removed his paw, pausing for a second as he felt moisture against it. The dog shakily raised his paw up, bright red fluid dripping down the paw, splattering against the ground as the dog gave a fearful whimper. He looked down, a bright red spot growing through the uniform, dripping down the jacket and shirt, splattering his pants and the ground as the dog gave a wheeze. Darnell grabbed at Cade as the dog tilted slowly to one side, his hand coming up, smacking his muzzle as the dogs eyes seemed to glaze over slightly.
“Hey, Hey, Cade, it's gonna be okay, its gonna be okay man” Darnell said, both hands grabbing at the wheezing dogs face, looking into his eyes. He quickly stood up, wincing at the pain in his legs as his hands pulled the dog up, wrapping his arm up and over his shoulder as he dragged the dog, his feet not wanting to pick up as the wheezing from Cade grew louder, blood dripping down his pants, his jacket and shirt by now a dark red from the blood loss. “ We’re almost there man, don't you worry brother” Darnell repeated over and over, trying to keep his companion awake still.
“Darnell… keep.. Her…. happy” grunted Cade, his head dropping slightly as the shark smacked at his muzzle, the dog softly groaning from the impact, but not saying much else.
“You can keep her fucking happy, she just wants in your pants, none of our fucking pants man, stay awake man, if not for me, for her” he said, the sound of voices growing as they continued forward. Cades head dropped down further, Darnell scanning between his front and back to Cade. His voice boomed, “HELP, ANY OF Y’ALL, GOT A BLEEDER, NEED A GOD DAMN DOCTOR MAN” echoing through the forest as the shark dragged his almost limp friend forward.
The voices grew louder now, the rapid crunching of leaves coming towards them, before the welcome sight of Americans came bursting through the foliage. A pair of them grabbed at Cade, lifting his arm off Darnell and dragging the dog, picking him up and swiftly carrying him back towards the bushes as a couple of others helped Darnell limp threw the trees.
His eyes scanned slowly at first, noticing the swiftly grouped tents in the small shaded clearing. He could see Cade, dragged down into a tent, a bent and dented medical cross hanging above it as he slowly sighed. “Any you guys know were the tanks are? I have a feeling one of them is gonna wanna be with Cade right now” he asked softly. One of the soldiers nodded, pointing further into a clearing, the camouflaged shapes of vehicles more evident now as he starred longer. He gave a node, One of the soldiers giving his chest a pat before leaving the shark to his own devices.
He sighed softly as he walked, hand coming up and gently rubbing his eyes slowly as he limped himself over to where the vehicles were situated at. A low whistle escaped from his mouth, some of the furries turning from the vehicles, eyes widening slightly at the sight of the Shark, dirty torn clothing, and blood stained uniform.
“Darnel!” exclaimed a voice, the tired eyes of the shark looking over to the source of commotion, smiling weakly at the sight of Luis, who was currently running towards him. His arms weakly opened, grabbing at the Zebra, who hooves wrapped around his chest hugging him close to him. “It's good to see yah brother, we were worried sick bout yah man” Luis said softly, squeezing the tired shark softly.
“For good reason, its hell back in the camp” muttered Darnell softly, Luis nodding as he helped the Shark back to the vehicles.
“Yah we know, Soldiers have been going out, recovering wounded and all that. Apparently the 8th armored Division will be here soon, though with a good portion of our company dead or wounded, we’re probably gonna be folded into them. By the way…. Have you seen Connor or Cade? None of us have seen them, and Kat’s getting antsy.” Luis said as the pair walked, Darnell giving a heavy breath as the large imposing figure of Kay could be seen, her bulky form currently covered in leaves and branches in a attempt to hide her from any prying German planes.
“Yah, I know where they’re at” he said softly as the pair walked up to the vehicles, all their eyes looking over to the figure, some of them widening, with Kay giving a grunt.
“Hey Nell! Good to see you made i!” bubbled Stacey, the large Half track bouncing almost on her tracks and tires. Nell softly smiled, nodding softly. He was going to answer her, but the angry rumble of Kays engine sounded, all available eyes going to her as her own eyes narrowed.
“Enough talk, where Cade” growled the Russian tank, eyes narrowing angrily at the Shark as he slowly rubbed the back of his neck with his hand.
“Right… right. So.. I have news on them both. Its.. not good” he stated, all eyes on the Shark now, even the sounds of their engines pettering off as he softly exhaled. “Connor… is… dead. I’m sorry you guys, he didn't make it” muttured Darnell. The faces around him fell, eyes downcasted at the news.
“How.. did he go?”asked Luis softly.
“Cade saw it.. He got caught in a strafing round. I.. won’t go into detail, but he was dead before he hit the ground apparently.” answered Nell, rubbing his neck more at the silence following his answer.
‘At least he died quickly” muttered Luis, earning grumblings of approval from the vehicles around him.
“Cade.. where is he” asked Kay, growling softly as Nell sighed.
“Hospital I guess you can call it? He got hit… don’t think either of us realized it till he collapsed and we saw the blood” he answered, Kay growling as her engine rumbled..
“I’m seeing him” growled the Tank, Nell growling as he moved to get in front of the tank as she tried to move.
“Fuck no you aren’t, He’s in a damn tent being worked on, you will not interrupt the doctors as they work” he growled. Kay snarled at him, narrowing her eyes as her hull brushed against his chest.
“You don’t tell me what to do, Little boy” she growled, leaning down as Nell returned her snarl.
“Kay… he’s right. The best thing you can do is right now is wait, okay?” stated Stacey, the half tracks eyes looking over to the tank as Kay growled. She stared down Nell, both their eyes locking before she rolled back a bit, growling softly as she settled herself on the ground. Darnel exhaled the breath he was holding when she finally backed down.
“I know you care for him alright? I’m sure he will be fine, You and he can talk once we got word from the doctors, last thing you want to do is scare them, especially if they are operating on him right now” Nell said, Kay giving a snort as her eyes shifted to the side. “Stacey, where are the others? Please don't tell me you two are the only ones to make it” he said turning to the Half track. She gave a shook of her front clip.
“Muller and his German Damen are fine last time we checked, the had bolted into the tree lines after us, don’t know where they went though we know they’re fine, we’ve heard them on our radios so we know they’re fein” she started saying, Darnel snorting at the statement. Course Muller would be with the girls, his crush was obvious as hell, “Isah is alive, though im assuming she wishes she wasn’t with Jack being dead. Tracey is fein as well, she’s helping secure supplies and helping wounded right now” she finished, Darnell giving a nod of his head.
“And the triplets?” he asked hopefully, seeing how the three Shermans weren’t anywhere nearby from what he could see. Stacey's mouth frowned at the statement.
“Two of them I know are tot, They were at the fuel depot getting fuel when It went up. The third, no idea, no word form any survivors on that one. Don’t even know which two died honestly, probably never will” she answered, Darnell giving a sigh as he rubbed his eyes with a free paw.
“Luis, what about crew. Please tell me that it's not just us three left, I haven’t seen any other COs or crews so far and that's worrying.” he said sullenly , sighing softly as he looked over the still frowning face of the Half-track.
“Probably dead” grumbled Kay, earning a glare from the Zebra at her interruption.
“We… don’t know if their alive or not man. No other COs have been seen if they are alive. All of the crew of the two triplets are dead, I know that for nearly a fact with the size of explosion. My brother is fine, he’s with Tracey. Andrew? No idea, missing so far, I’m hoping he’s fine, don’t know how Cade will take losing another piece of the family if he is dead. Jack is dead… you know that, Isah was very vocal about his death” answered Luis. A low, deep sigh escaped from the shark at the statement.
“So we were basically wiped out. Great, fucking great. What could go wrong, has indeed went wrong for us today” he said as he slowly sat down onto the grass. The Zebra gave a shrug at the answer, joining the shark on the ground.
“At least Cade is alive. So I guess we scored luckier than most furries here. A lot of friends and brothers are dead man, we got caught with our pants down and it shows” Luis said, Nell growling at the statement.
“Well if the fucking 31st had done their goddamn job and captured and cleared correctly instead of steam rolling through the damn towns and getting fucking war trophies, we wouldn’t be in this goddamn fucking mess” he said, hmphing.
“He’s got a point Lue, If they had, we wouldn’t have worried about air” added Stacey. Luis sighed, nodding softly as he smoothed out the dirty shirt he was wearing.
“I know, trust me, I’m all too aware. I’m hoping General Oswald calls them the fuck out for this, He’s apparently extremely unhappy at what happened to us, and when he gets here, prepare for a lot of yelling and chewing out.” he grumbled.
“Of course, this makes the army look bad, getting our asses kicked like this” grumbled Darnell. The four sat there in silence for a few minutes, the sound of the makeshift camp around them in full steam, the moans and whimpers of the freshly wounded mixed in with the sound of trucks and the conversations around them. The sound of crunching grew closer to them, the four turning to a furry walking towards them, the medical cross evident on his shoulders as the Pitbull stopped. He stared at the four, Darnell being the first to speak.
“Doc…. how is he?” he asked, hope creeping into his voice as the doctor stared at them. He closed his eyes for a few seconds, slowly opening them again.
Than he spoke.
