She truly is a beautiful dragoness...Alexander's a lucky fellow! Part of me thinks we need a fluffy moment...maybe Alexander just telling her that she's beautiful, or maybe even Ddraig reflecting that she likes her appearance more now, and is fine with the fact that she's so feminine...

Not sure just where it could go, though...perhaps...is there a drabble about Ddraig and Alexander having an anniversary? That could begin with Ddraig tidying herself up in the mirror and using the odd feminine product (for her eyebrows, for instance?), and have her musing about how she so easily uses that now, when a few years back, she'd have considered that "girly" and something she'd never do...

Blegh, I'm not big on the idea of building a story purely around either Ddraig looking nice, or Ddraig fantasizing over her own appearance. It just feels really kinda vapid to me, and I don't think it's something powerful enough to stop Ddraig and make her fuss over herself. Maybe if she does, a little, but catches herself. It feels like her becoming more dependent on Alexander; it just doesn't feel very... Ddraigy, to me.

Hm, true...it's easy for that to turn into something that's fairly pointless and doesn't advance the story. The bit that really interests me is just her thought process; how she'd feel about her change and how she'd react to it...

Ddraigtanto In reply to AMCAlmaron [2016-05-21 01:12:28 +0000 UTC]
That's fair enough, but I do feel I kinda covered it in UAA. In oSaS, this is basically Ddraig being hit with pregnancy, the most female of all tropes, and basically trying to fight the limitations of her change for the sake of her people, and for just giving the middle finger to gender roles.

AMCAlmaron In reply to Ddraigtanto [2016-05-21 01:16:50 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I suppose...it'd be better to just augment those scenes at some point with additional bits, like with the tail bit, or the new scene with her and Alexander...as for OSAS, that sounds really cool (I mean, I knew we were sort of doing that already, but it still sounds really interesting!); have you got any specific scenes in mind?

Hmmm... Well, if there's any sort of hurt/comfort sort of fluff, Ddraig would be trying to resist it, if for a little while: From my PoV, She'll believe that she needs to be a figure of strength to her army/people/country/family/etc. which basically translates to 'don't cry/get upset/seek support from others, ever!'. It'll be a little hypocritical, really, as she'd be the first dragon to tell someone else that it's healthy to do just that; not for her though! She's the LEADER, others have the freedom to vent like that because SHE helps to carry all the weight for them... At least, that's how I think she'd be about it, and when things aren't so bad, that's fine! But during a war, this sort of thinking starts to put some real strain on her, which is probably more unhealthy for her in the long run. That's how I want to play it: She's CONSTANTLY trying to resist Alex's efforts to get her to let off steam and vent, or at least just be a NORMAL dragon and ask for help, so it makes the time when she finally DOES give in all the more significant.

Ooh, that sounds good...and I'm guessing she'd ultimately give in before the invasion of Sekeolath begins? Perhaps...hmm, I'm reminded of that old concept you had where she breaks and considers just giving up and giving Sekeolath Drakenholm in return for peace, but Alexander talks her out of it and comforts her...but I also think it'll be really interesting to see Ddraig clearly having more and more trouble coping, and Alexander noticing and getting visibly annoyed that she's trying to shoulder it all herself (they did already discuss this in ITP, after all...oh, and since it'd be written from her POV, it'd be a gradual change in his behaviour; something the reader could pick up on), and finally it reaches breaking point and by the end, Ddraig's managed to let it all out and accept that she doesn't need to oversee everything; she doesn't have to prove anything...trying to do it all herself will just make her burn out.

Well, that's something I can't wait to read...writteee eeeet! Perhaps...okay, how's this? After the General scene, where Ddraig goes to start training, we actually get a brief bit where we see what Ddraig's thinking...basically, she's decided that she needs to be tough again for everybody else's sake, and so she's trying to go back to her old ways of thinking...from before she had a mate, and when she was still male (which is why she's so determined to get into her old armour, and why she's so miffed when she can't; it's just making things difficult). In that same bit, she could note that she's been a bit too emotional lately, and chalk that up to the hormones rushing through her body, and thus resolve to get better control again (thus setting up that detail)...but the only problem is she ends up being a bit too distant and trying to handle everything and not only does Alexander notice and start worrying about her (thus leading to her trying to be more distant), but it leads to her burning out...so after that, Ddraig and Alexander have a moment (I'm picturing them both lying on the floor in an embrace, as if Ddraig sank to her knees and Alexander held her, and then just sitting there for a bit quietly in one another's arms), and they figure out a better balance for Ddraig...

"Come on... Come on!" Nightshade had broken many tools in trying to remove the gauntlet from her paw, including drills, industrial saws and many crowbars and machinery to try to force the artifact to open, or just get off her paw somehow! Her days with the gauntlet had started with excitement: She'd seen what her daughter's gauntlet could do, and even if it had cost her several of her own med in the 'demonstration', she had been very keen on testing out her own gauntlet to see just what it could do! That excitement had quickly turned into disappointment as she discovered that, no matter what she tried, she couldn't get the gauntlet to actually DO anything. Then, that disappointment rapidly became frustration: Not only was the gauntlet utterly useless to her, but now she couldn't even it off again!
Now, after hours of fighting with it, that frustration was starting to turn into desperation: The gauntlet didn't want to come off, and ha

👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Ddraigtanto In reply to AMCAlmaron [2016-05-23 20:35:14 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I don't want to have what I'm going to call my 'Drakovia Syndrome*' with this one: the Sekeolasians are still Scandinavians, and as such, the Sekeolasians still CARE about their fellow Scandinavians, and their conquest of the other Nordic countries isn't going to be universally approved of, even in the higher ups; personally, I think that's why the Kalmar Union argument is quite useful: The rallying cry is to unite all the Scandinavian peoples under one country, except really, the war bastardises this noble goal into something more amoral.
Although, I do notice the irony here: You're so keen to come up with Avalarian generals (and I haven't forgotten that bit! Look at how they interact with Ddraig and vis versa compared to Nightshade when that comes up: In short, notice how Nightshade is barely talking here? That's deliberate. ), and yet I'm quietly running off coming up with all the Sekeolasian generals. It kinda makes sense that there's fewer generals in Sekeolath than Avalar: Avalar's a far denser country than Sekeolath, with far more people; they have less soldiers than Sekeolath at present, but the Avalarians are better organized, and have a better command structure than the Sekeolasians.

AMCAlmaron In reply to Ddraigtanto [2016-05-24 07:50:43 +0000 UTC]
Drakovians?
Sounds good...I suppose there'd be some Generals who are just power-hungry and keen to keep that power they have, but there could also be some who are just trying to do their job and hope that their government will lead to something better with time (it'll be good to contrast it with Avalar, and have them pursuing similar expansionist goals, or damning Avalar as a growing mass). Heck, perhaps Malefor's a state secret...or at least, his plans are; Sekeolath evidently backed him during the last war (unless their propaganda claimed that was a disguise worn by a soldier, or that Malefor was struck down by the Avalarians when he was trying to save everybody, so the majority of people think him a hero...while the higher-ups converse with him about their evil plans).
Hee hee hee...wait, have you written a scene with the Avalarian Generals?

Ddraigtanto In reply to AMCAlmaron [2016-05-24 10:15:28 +0000 UTC]
Ah, that's more stuff from before I was on DA. Basically, it was the equivalent to Sekeolath today... Except it was completely black and white: It wasn't just a despotism, it was a complete dystopian nightmare with no redeeming qualities; it was ugly, polluted, corrupt and needlessly cruel without any ideological reasoning. It was pretty shit, and before I knew anything about Politics or Ideology. Bascially, it's shit.
Hmmm, perhaps. Ultimately, my thoughts for contrast were the control the respective rulers have over their own generals: Nightshade isn't actually DOING much here, not really giving any input of her own, and doesn't really seem able to keep her generals in line: I would indeed agree that at least one of them is out for their own power, probably two, tops.
I have not yet, but the point is that Ddraig actually HAS military experience, while Nightshade does not, and so Ddraig would be far more capable of keeping her generals from going for each others' throats. As far as I'm plannning, in that scene, it's Revius that has the power, not Nightshade: He'll instruct Nightshade as to what his boss wants, and she'll have to march in lockstep... Erm, I suppose Ddraig's version of the scene would also be quite reactionary compared to Nightshade, as she's having to deal with her country being invaded.

AMCAlmaron In reply to Ddraigtanto [2016-05-24 10:24:36 +0000 UTC]
Ah, gotcha.
Sounds interesting, in any case...and it'll hammer in the reality that Nightshade's quite powerless, even if she hasn't realised it yet. By the way, don't forget to work in that line somewhere about Malefor's top servants all being of noble blood; that'll be useful for later...
Ooh, hadn't even thought of that; I was just thinking it'd be interesting to have all these characters debating while the monarch listens to them all...but that's good! Keep writing these scenes...

Yeah, I remember it. I'm just not sure where to put it in yet.
Well, yeah, there'll be a bit of that, but do you think Nightshade could actually shut them up and get them to work together properly at the end?

AMCAlmaron In reply to Ddraigtanto [2016-05-24 19:00:02 +0000 UTC]
Ah, goody...
Well, she might be able to get a word in - since she is technically their monarch, and they have to listen to her - but her input might not be valued that much, and so they'd go back to their old conversation shortly afterwards, with her too powerless to do anything. It could be interesting if after the gauntlet shows her memories of a certain place, she actually becomes a bit more assertive and so at the next debate like this, actually gives orders and tells her Generals to obey or else.

AMCAlmaron In reply to Ddraigtanto [2016-05-24 19:24:22 +0000 UTC]
Oh, I don't mean she'd suddenly become revitalised and determined to win or anything like that, just that if her generals brushed her off again and got back to debating, instead of just shrinking and watching from the corner, she'd go "General X, I gave you an ORDER." and stun them all, since they're not used to her actually wielding authority. It'd only be a small order in any case; something designed to prevent large scale slaughter in some foolish counter-attack or something like that.

Ddraigtanto In reply to AMCAlmaron [2016-05-24 19:30:08 +0000 UTC]
Sounds good. I kinda like the idea of the gauntlet occasionally taking control and yanking her over in a certain direction to make her say or do something. Again, she's going to want to chop off her own paw at the worst of its activity, so it's going to be tough on her, more so as time goes by.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
AMCAlmaron In reply to Ddraigtanto [2016-05-26 19:20:01 +0000 UTC]
Hmm, okay, although it shouldn't be too noticeable...perhaps it could be as simple as the voice speaking in her mind, and then the gauntlet contracting around her claws and squeezing her hand painfully if she's not doing what it says...
Say, on the topic of OSAS, it occurs to me that if Drakenholm is the second capital of Avalar and is directly opposite Sekeolath, surely it should be the most defended city in Avalar? How on earth are they going to breach those defences? A massive misdirection? Or the use of a massive force and/or weapon? Or both?

Ddraigtanto In reply to AMCAlmaron [2016-05-26 20:08:14 +0000 UTC]

Well, it probably still is, but remember that Malefor's got all his hordes throw at the city as well, so it would probably be just enough to force them out for a bit.
