Description The artist who pieced together
the stained glass mosaic probably
did not see what I did when I looked at his/her ocean,
saw the swells and dips of ocean waters
and I saw the fragments that were meant to come together
to form waves.

I saw double red helixes and odd pieces of seashell and scales,
This was not a body of water but the body
of Plato’s Ouroboros and the first immortal,

created by G-d to be self-perpetuating
Totally self-sufficient and its waste its sustenance,
its tail clamped tightly in its mouth and so large
The frame could only hold a coil the size of a mountain.

it could eat the sun if it ever opened its mouth.

to not need food or predators, light or dark or
company or solitude
or g-d
is to be Ouroboros,

but i am small,
human, and only a little older
than my cousin who stands in front
of the stained glass to perform the rites of
Becoming a Bat Mitzvah, an adult

and when I look up to see the Creator
who created me dependent like everything after
the failure Ouroboros,

I see only
bare rafters holding up the ceiling.
