The moat has overflowed,
the unadorned castle built lopsided and
carved out and
Thank God no one has to live in it

except the flies and sand crabs,
the occasional ladybugs who enjoy
vacationing in sand castles,

and I say, “even if it is

malformed and crumbling,
at least you can tell what it is
(and someone’s enjoying it).”

you ask me if
we’re still talking about sandcastles.

later I went back
(because castles without people are too lonely)
and filled in the courtyard,
made an etched hump and each tower
into a flipper,
a round head, triangular tail,

and I pressed two ripped apart mussel shells
into the turtle’s face.
so it could see.
