These monsters are to mindflayers as chimpanzees are to humans. Neothelids are very similar biologically to their cousins, but don't use their psionic powers nearly as often. This means that they're immune to the negative effects of consuming human brains. It's been theorized that mindflayers were a smaller, more specialized type of monster like the neothelids, but every time a mindflayer is asked this they deny any connection in apparent embarrassment.
