Description Rushing through a freeway in a hovering bike, heading to the spaceport.

The technical details:
This is probably my biggest digital painting ever, in every sense of the word. It started more than a year ago, and I have been working on it in small blocks of my spare time. So I don't know how much time I have invested on it, but it should have been a lot.
Completely drawn in Adobe Photoshop CS, using a Wacom tablet (except the planet base texture). Its size is 6000x4000 pixels. As I usually work at a zoom amount of 100% or 200% (even with pixel level details!), this image was extremely time consuming. If the composition is good, an if it looks good at such a close distance, the image would look fine also at smaller sizes.
I kept the number of layers low (around 20) and split the image in two different parts (the sky and the rest of the image) to prevent Photoshop from becoming too unresponsive when handling such a big image.

The motivation:
I wanted to paint a sci-fi scene, a cityscape, a starfield, a planet, an interesting character, some mountains and some futuristic vehicles. Then I decided to combine everything in the same image. Maybe it could be a little bit overdetailed, but I like looking at every section of the image and finding new tiny details. It started as a personal project, and I'm going to make a big poster out of this one.

The creation process details:
I thought of some kind of shark when designing the bike. That way I created such wings, fins and vents.
The character is just a daring and bold pilot, with a futuristic uniform which fits the bike well.
The other vehicle is my concept of sci-fi heavy transport or truck, with heavy machinery and bulky structure.
Both planets use, in fact, the same base texture, rendered in Bryce, and heavily tweaked, painted and post-processed in Photoshop.
The cityscape is based on skyscrapers, with lots (lots!!) of shining windows.
The mountains were 100% hand painted, and are mainly based on a single layer in which I painted the shadows of each peak. So the rocky texture was achieved 100% by hand. They are probably the most time consuming part of the image.

Hope you like it. Comments are much appreciated.

Incredible!
I have a small suggestion... to show us just how detailed it is, you could make several 100% crops of the image and post them in your scraps (or gallery..whichever). That way, people can truly appreciate how much work went into this piece. This is by far better than the one I'm working on

That's a pretty good idea! It's the only way to completely appreciate the scene I'll do it as soon is I find some spare time
And thanks a bunch for the . After such a very long work, that's a great reward for me!
I'm really eager to see your image. Remember that every artwork in progress has a lot of chances of becoming a masterpiece. And then, when we look back at what we created, we think: "Whoa! How could I make such a wonderful thing?"

...lol, I've been staring at your avatar for like two minutes before I realized that I'm not typing anything...it's hypnotic...trippy...

I really hope that it will turn out well...I have very little experience with digital art...though I have extensive knowledge of photoshop, it is limited to photoretouching and enhancement...not digital painting. It's looking ok at the moment...I'm in the process of adding some finer details...should be done with it in a few days. Thanks for the support!

The is well earned! You're very welcome for that!

It's the second time that I hear the same exact word related to my avatar: "trippy" That's what you get when you mix up two perpendicular orbits of four "planets" each
It's always difficult to start with a new technique. But you will find out that you will improve fast with practice. In fact, I think that there is a common basis for a lot of artistic techniques. The more you learn in a specific field, the easier to learn new artistic fields
Then I'll have to wait just two more days to see it...

After seeing your work, I changed my mind about the 'two days'
I'm going to spend a bit more time to perfect it...but I'll post a preview of it some time today.

Great preview It's better not to rush an image (specially if it's very promising). You will be happier with the results. And 6000x4000 => It's full of stars!!

Mountain-Dan In reply to E-Serrano [2006-09-06 19:48:12 +0000 UTC]

lol, 'It's full of stars'...was that meant to be a pun?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

E-Serrano In reply to Mountain-Dan [2006-09-06 21:14:03 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, no, no pun intended! I was just stating that there are lots of interesting details in such a big picture
But now that I'm thinking about it... Wasn't "Oh my god, it's full of stars!" a famous phrase from "2001 A Space Odissey"?

Yes, just traversing a 6000x4000 pixels image with a zoom amount of 200% could be a long task.
Thanks a lot for appreciating the effort.
