Description I've had Guardians of the Galaxy on the brain this weekend. Particularly Rocket Raccoon, so I literally had to take a pause on what I was working on to get this out of my head otherwise it was going to drive me crazy. So, with that said, I present, the visual history of Rocket Raccoon as to date. (BTW, Bill Mantlo, co-creator of Rocket suffered major injuries do to an accident. Read up about that, him, and the donation drive for him here http://www.lifehealthpro.com/2011/11/07/tragic-tale

I liked when he wore nothing on his legs.  As much as I like the far left rendition over-all, 1985 is still my favorite, and you did him excellent as well well as the oldest two, which all look great with their legs out.  More RACCOON showing!

This picture is awesome! I kinda fell in love with Rocket Raccoon, and this overview puts the somewhat peculiar transformation of his appearance so well together. I wonder why Marvel didn't do more consistency checks on him. I guess the different creative teams have a lot of autonomy.

I like your drawings of these versions even better than Marvel's by the way, ever thought about working for them?

I like the 1985 and the 2014 (movie) versions best. A raccoon is most beautiful when he looks just like a raccoon, IMHO. I also like the personality of the '85 and the '14 variants best, although they are quite different. The very first version almost seemed to speak British English, and the '85 version still is a balanced guy with some self-composure. The '14 guy has more personality, which makes him even more likeable. The 2008 version with the mohawk hairdo doesn't work so well for me, he sometimes is close to psychotic. They used him for some recent animated cartoon appearances and included the 'I'm not a raccoon' gag. Not a raccoon? My dear sir, you are most definitely a raccoon! Take some pride in your heritage!

Just one question ... is this picture available in a higher resolution? I'd love to have a copy.

I would love to work with/for Marvel once doing something with Rocket, but I don't know, I may be too old for such things now. As for Higher res, I'll have to check it out and see if I saved a bigger file.

Thanks for the feedback! I really enjoy your picture, especially the 1985 version. IMHO your version is better proportioned than the original drawn by Mike Mignola. The 1985 original sometimes has ineptly long legs, a bit froglike. Your 1976 version is also very nice. It's great to see Rocket as he would look in colour and drawn with a clear line instead of the fuzzy original. And the 2008 version ... well, I love all of them.

I guess working as a professional comic artist is a pretty tough job, even for young artists. Well, I'm really glad that there are many artists who make their own fan art and comics just for the fun of it. I love Rocket, he's a special guy with a lot of personality and I enjoy the many versions fan artists have made.

Thank you. Yes, I've been a fan of him ever since I first saw him back when I was a kid, so many many years ago. While I wish he still maintained some of the original personality he had back in his solo comic (as well as some of the characters) I'm glad others have now discovered him and he's now a major player in the Marvel Universe. Who'd have ever thought that would have happened. But at least he's now making taking animals cool again.

I couldn't agree more. Rocket is like a furry ambassador for realistic and believable anthropomorphic characters.

OH, I know it is, but since it was drawn by the same artist I decided to skip it, but I guess eventually I could add that.

My first encounter of Rocket was the 80s, grey furred, green outfit Rocket. That was the version I originally fell in love with. Though, the current's not so bad either, obviously.

This is really cool and interesting, but I must say that at least to me, movie Rocket's color is more like 2007 Rocket, than the darker brown, like 1976 Rocket, you drew him as. That's just stupid nitpicking though, this is awesome.

It is the art style of his new solo comic. It's actually kinda cute when you see it full in action.

This is a great job. You capture the style of each era very well.
The 2014 and 2013 versions of him (with shoes) makes no sense.
(I'm talking about the design, not your work)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ebonyleopard In reply to XimonR [2014-08-05 00:54:28 +0000 UTC]

Actually to me, it's the one design that does make the most sense when you think of his name "Rocket". He's always had, well..rocket skates. They are what gave him the "rocket" part of his name, but then by 2007, they lost them for a few years. It's the 2013 design that gives him his rocket skates back and that would require for his whole foot to be covered in order to fly in space, BUT, the design also has it where that white line around his calves, I assume they retract at that point upward. Because otherwise, you see his feet like in some of the previous designs.

XimonR In reply to Ebonyleopard [2014-08-06 15:00:50 +0000 UTC]

I see your point. I cannot help to think the idea of rocket shoes are rather silly anyway
It worked for the 82 and 85 versions (where he actually took them off).
Those boots for 2014 and 2013 versions doesn't even look like rocket shoes.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ebonyleopard In reply to XimonR [2014-08-06 21:59:01 +0000 UTC]

True. But, and this is me assuming, I'm assuming they are because in some pictures by the same artist you either see his toes then when he's in action the whole foot would be covered and you'd see the exhaust trail coming from his feet.

XimonR In reply to Ebonyleopard [2014-08-06 23:10:37 +0000 UTC]

Yes, you could be right.
Well enough about feet, I will say again you did a great picture, and keep up the great stuff!
