Description A lot of folks have been asking me to do another tutorial, so I've decided to make one about coloring, as this was the most commonly requested topic.

This isn't really a tutorial for beginners, though... You should know how to use Photoshop or your favorite image editing software, otherwise you probably won't find it very useful.

If you come across stuff that you don't understand, you should find the answer pretty quickly by typing in the word in Google, but if not, let me know in a comment or send me a pm!

Do you not know what a core shadow is, because thats kind of important. Cast shows turn into core shadows on a form shadow, they dont just simply "bleed out". Cast shadows are caused by an absence of direct light and the least amount of reflected light. Shadows are just made of reflected light, as an absence of both reflected light and direct light would result in pure and utter blackness. Core shadows are on the edge of a shadow because its where the form starts to turn, so it receives the least amount of reflected light and no more direct light, that is why core shadows and cast shadows are roughly the same value. Since you understand what cast shadows are, why does your drawing's head not cast a shadow over onto her shoulder, it would only make sense with your light source and the cast shadow of the breast; you also missed all the cast shadows that would be on the face. Cast shadows travel in the same direction as the light source whereas form shadows travel perpendicular to the light. One thing here that you seem be approaching, im not sure if it was intentional, is that when your light source is warm, your shadows will be cool, and vice versa. Knowing that makes coloring so much easier, since you have a lot of impressionable artists watching you, perhaps would be a good thing to tell them. These are just a few of things ive been picking up, not intentionally trying to be pretentious by the way, so bear with me XD. Cant wait to see your next tut.

I don't know much about those different distinctions of shadows, but I get what you mean and you've also made a nice tutorial about it. Although, what exactly is the difference between form shadows and core shadows?

You're right about the lack of shadows on the face, neck, shoulder, etc. but unfortunately I lack the skill, knowledge and time to make a technically perfect tutorial... I only have a few hours time to draw after work and on weekends, so if I don't do it fast I know that I'll never get it done.

Core shadows are a part of form shadows, they travel on the edge of where the form shadow begins. Core shadows exist because they get no direct light and the smallest amount of reflected light. Reflected light on an object is just strongest towards the edge where it becomes more apparent, but all shadows are made of reflected light. I guess i may as well bring up the opposite rule of light and shadow now. The bright planes in direct light become the dark planes in shadow. When an object enters into shadow, it no longer gets any direct light, so its only light source becomes reflected light. Reflect light comes from the opposite direction as direct light, so if the light comes from above, the reflected light comes from below. Cast shadows become core shadows on the edge of form shadow, thus they have the same, or similar value. Cast shadows are crisp, form shadows are fuzzy is how my teacher wanted us to remember. Its a ton to take in and im not sure how well im explaining this, ask me if its unclear. For your next piece if youd like me to do a once over on your lighting, id be more than happy to as well

So would it be correct to say that a form shadow is everything that is not covered by direct light, while the core shadow is simply the part of an object that gets the least amount of direct and reflected light?
Is there perhaps an "opposite" term for form shadows, i.e. the parts that are covered in direct light (maybe "lit areas")?

I'm not sure if your teachers distinction is very helpful, though
I mean, cast shadows can also be fuzzy if the light source is bigger than the object that's casting the shadow.
So perhaps it's better to say that cast shadows are created by objects blocking the light from reaching another object, while form shadows are created on parts of the object where the direct light can't reach?

arvalis In reply to ecchi-mia [2010-11-15 01:36:10 +0000 UTC]

Cast shadows become fuzzy as the shadow moves further away from the object casting the shadow. Cast shadows also become dimmed or almost nonexistent under filtered light, like a very overcast day. All shadows do not get direct light, thats what makes them a shadow. Form shadows are shadow caused by change in planes on the form, cast shadows are from objects obscuring a direct light source. As a general rule of thumb, if you want your work look dramatic and eye catching, use crisp cast shadows and fuzzy form shadows. Youre not going for photorealism anyway, so these little exceptions to these rules are of little importance.
