Red jasper was sometimes used by the Egyptians in place of carnelian as the "Blood of Isis" and as the "Buckle of Isis" on the throat of the dead. It was especially fine for young girls, giving them grace and beauty and curing their diseases. Medicinally it was used, for the most part because of it color affinity, to stop hemorrage, strengthen the pulse, and to check the flux. In modern Italy it makes the wearer invisible. It was sometimes used as the birthstone for March.
