They were featured during the Shattered Grid storyline on Lord Drakkon's side. I think the reason in-universe for the resemblance to the Space Rangers is due to the fact that they (mostly Andros) were responsible for destroying the United Alliance of Evil and that SPD wanted to honor that by making the A-Squad i.e. the best of the best in the mold of Andros' old team. Just my little head-canon there.
