Description

A terrifying, guttural call cut through the air. A piercing roar of a beast shouting out at the enemy, one that had already retreated. Blood painted the blue-green grass red around the curled form of a hybrid behind it. The man looked so infinitely small, trees at the forest edge towering over even the kukuri stood before him.

Velox held his body low, eyes darting between the foliage of the forest, watching and waiting for any new potential threat. He knew that there were two, a scruffy old dove and her half-blind rook that followed her, but he didn’t know where they had gone. They fled at his first attack, he headbutted the dove and sent her flying. Could they be plotting more? He didn’t know. He stood like a statue, ears flicking to every new sound, every bird call or thump in the trees. He couldn’t smell anything new. It felt like years had passed by the time he determined that the threat was gone.

The amber rook let out a shaky breath that he didn’t know he was holding, straightening his posture and turning around to look at the man in the grass. The iron scent invaded all corners of his senses, burning at his nostrils as he tried to breathe. He wasn’t sure if Eshi was even alive after what the dove had done to him.
Velox wasn’t there in time to see much of it, just that the dove had chased him up a tree and grabbed him by his foot. She tugged at him until he fell, and then that was when he struck. The rook had headbutted her hard enough to knock the wind from her lungs, and it seemed that was all it took. His injury looked horrible, something out of his worst nightmare. His boot was torn like it was made of paper, he couldn’t even make out what was inside it or if there was even anything left. He stepped close and leaned low, sniffing at his hair and trying to check for signs of life. The man twitched away from his breath, putting a scraped up hand over his head. He was alive!
“ESHI!”
The ground rumbled, shaking like an earthquake as the towering form of a prairie kukuri got closer. Velox’s head shot up, turning sideways and backing away immediately. A hybrid woman jumped off the dark prairie and ran to Eshi, scooping him close and checking him over.
Jolt didn’t turn to look at either kukuri, focusing on her wounded friend. “Protect, Corvus.”
Velox watched the two hybrids closely, hoping that something would tell him if Eshi was okay. His attention was snatched by a low snarl. Corvus moved to stand over them, leaning low and using her head to shield them from his sight while her claws flexed. Her piercing blue eyes locked on him, ears pinned flat against her head and thin lines for pupils. She had a menacing aura to her, even the air seemed to cower in fear with her there.
The rook yielded, flickering his gaze from her to the grass below. He lowered his head, tucking his arms in and trying to seem small. Oh, how he wished he could sink into the ground right now. He didn’t want a fight.
“Leave.” The prairie’s voice dripped with wrath, the air cracking at her will, like lightning had struck.
Velox shuddered, fur standing on edge. “I-I didn’t do- This!” He yelped exasperatedly. He couldn’t find the words he needed. “I would never!”
Corvus didn’t seem to care for his pleas, her eyes briefly dropping to the two on the ground to check on them. He watched her gaze soften on them, maybe even showing a glint of worry despite her prickly attitude. It was gone in an instant though, replaced by that glare of fury she wore so well.
“Look- I was helping,” Velox tried again, taking a meek step closer. “There’s- there’s this dove, she has someone with her. I saw her picking on him!”
The inked dove bared her teeth, hissing through them. “Leave.” She was frighteningly calm as she repeated her demand.
“But- I didn’t hurt him, I was helping!” Velox snapped, his teeth bared in response. He shrunk smaller into himself, a shudder traveling down his spine.
Jolt moved to stand, catching both kukuri's attention. The hybrid had made a makeshift bandage for Eshi’s wounds and wrapped him in her cape, picking him up as he gripped at her shirt. Velox sighed in relief, relaxing for just a moment before the prairie stepped past them.
The common felt his legs lock up in terror as her shadow cast over him, slowly looking up to meet her gaze. He shook like a leaf in the breeze.
“I-I just, I want to- to know he’s safe-”
“I will not repeat myself again,” Corvus spoke low and calm, it was chilling. She leaned her head down, angling her crown horns in Velox’s direction. “This is your final warning. Leave.”
Velox swallowed hard, eyes widening in terror as he stared at the wall of muscle that invaded his personal space. His legs wouldn’t move, they couldn’t. He was locked in place staring up at Corvus. Suddenly, she roared in his face. The rook turned tail and ran, hopping over bushes and logs and other debris of the forest. He could hear her roaring again, the forest bending to her command around her. It felt like the world was under her control, that she was the king of it all. That dove was truly horrifying.
