Description
A commission for and her series Andromeda. Andromeda, accompanied by Nihlus's brother, speaks with a turian elder on Palaven. Garrus, unaware of her presence, passes by outside. So I told myself I wasn't going to worry about the plants. I could draw alien plants for days. Then I drew one... and then of course I had to create some biological rules that explain the "pourquoi?" of their appearance.
I think I just like to torture myself.

Dude...
This is probably the best concept of Palaven I've seen. D:

Million thanks for adding this picture into *ME-universe* gallery! The plants here were one thing that inspired me to create the club.
I can imagine that you are busy with your personal life and whatnot, but if you a time and have any more ideas of the possible flora from Palaven I'd be delighted, if you could sketch them and add them too the gallery.
In fact if you have any sketches and maybe ideas of the already existing plants name and living habitats etcr, you do some info charts of them and upload them too!
Here is a link that might be interesting to you. It is a new bioware contest

Oh wow, I was away for a bit and just made it to your comment. I actually have a lot of ideas for palaven plants and landscapes. I've been meaning to make time to work on some concept art...
That contest looks awesome, but alas, I have no 3D modelling skills.

Excellent! I hope that your works will also inspire other people to create alien/ME related landscapes, fauna, flora etcr...
I'd love to then add them on the ME universe gallery, with your permission of course!
Yeah, I noticed too only much later, that it is solely 3D contest...

I think it goes without saying this is a visual masterpiece... however, I'm most drawn in by the scene itself being depicted here. I love how casual and even tranquil it appears, and yet, I can't help feeling as though there is so much more to this then I know, and it just draws me in closer to the whole piece. You just captured this moment wonderfully, I love it.

Hmmm. Love the level of detail and the glass and light effects in that area. The plants are pretty (the climbing vine meets pitcher plant meets lilac meets staghorn plant is a cool concept. As is the mutated sundew (I wonder whether it can move) ) And the colour of the building is lovely.
The only thing that I could criticise is the voluminous plant in the lower left corner. For my taste it has a bit too much weight in this composition and makes the corner look a bit cramped and dark to me. Just personal taste. If I was the gardener there I'd cut the top row of it
I love the vine clinging to the cracks in that wall. I think it's on a long-term mission to bring down the house.

I could stare at this beautiful piece for hours - the detail in all your work is just astounding! Truly, you are my favourite artist on dA. Whether it's gorgeous art like this or Poorly Drawn Mass Effect (which you should know I just read through again for the hundredth time! Lmfao!), I will never get tired of seeing your name in my watch list!

I just realized I didn't comment on this absolutely wonderful picture. Shame on me... lol. Your Mass Effect drawings are unmatched to me; it's not just the colors or the shape. They are so full of life and everyone of them tells its own story. Absolutely loved the plants, too. Very inventive.
Overall, another stunning work from you. Thank you!

Thanks! I got a lot of grief in art school for my drawings being too illustrative. I always thought paintings and drawings were more interesting if they had some substance and weren't just pretty to look at... so it's always nice to hear people appreciate that about my drawings

What happened to the classical art styles where even the smallest detail like a fly on a pear or a bird's claw was drawn with meticulousness? Forgive me, I am not an art specialist by any means, and if anything I don't really understand the value of what they call 'abstract art', but I was always attracted to very detailed paintings, at which I can look times and times again and fins something I hadn't heretofore seen.

Palaveni Cherry Climber/Creeper. Love it. I would have it in my garden, but just like all of the other plants, the dog would kill it. Or maybe it would kill the dog? Humm...

I have decided that all the plants on Palaven are mobile. That's right, no roots, just giant rain catching doodads and roots that act like really slow centipede feet. If you want something in your garden you have to chain it to the ground.
It might kill your dog, you never know. D:

YES YOU WIN A PRIIIIIIIIIZE
My "this needs logic before I can draw it" brain bits decided that the plants on palaven like to move around, so they collect water with cone shaped foliage - thus keeping themselves mobile. Then the water is stored in what looks like flowers, which is actually where much of the photosynthesis happens - and I figure the water sacks also act as propagation mechanisms where if exploded by some passing great white batahk, it would spread the spores/seeds locked inside.
These are the things that keep my up at night...

I love the contrast between the turian-high-tech-Palaven and the "nature" house.
Keep that up!

You know, I'm surprised by how much I enjoyed seeing a building actually made of bricks, mortar and stone on Palaven. I find there's too much metal and plastic in sci-fi architecture, to actually find something that looks old is rather quite pleasant, especially when contrasted with the more typical Mass Effect-style skyline in the background. Plus it helps give the picture a warm, summery, almost Mediterranean look overall and still looks distinctly alien.
Love the work done on the plants and Garrus as well; the amount of effort you put into them really shows.

Yeah, it's so tempting to just make everything grey and glowing... but I figure, who says all of Palaven has to be brand new and shiny looking? Plus it's more fun this way.

Given the rather conservative, highly civic-minded nature of turian society, you'd expect them to want to preserve ancient buildings.

Yes! xD That sounds exactly like my kind of story!
Lol, awesome. Downloaded it and will start reading it tonight or early tomorrow.
And yes, I'm always alone so I can focus on the read and I'm far out in the countryside anyway so no need for blinds. I honestly wouldn't mind terribly much if someone caught me reading Garrus smut either. It'd just be a fun topic to discuss with the 'spy' I'm sure!

Oh wow! efleck, I probably say this a hundred times, but I love your style. It's like it sings to me. The plants are unique and very creative to look at. The funny thing is Garrus does look like he took longer, but you've probably got him down by now right? All the flowers and vegetation is just drawn so well. I love how you can see the strokes of color clearly in certain areas and how the rest of it is neatly blended. And Garrus' armor is so detailed and shiny. Also love the turians by Andromeda (I really need to read that fanfiction). I did notice one thing though; because Garrus is so close to the edge it feels like there's alot of tension there. It might work to extend the background a bit so he's not soo close, but other than that this piece really is amazing. I never grow tired of your work.

efleck In reply to Celleno [2012-08-10 16:38:06 +0000 UTC]
Thanks
Yeah, Garrus's position is sort of due to a number of layout changes as the piece developed... in the end, bringing him closer made the outdoor setting feel smaller... but I know what you mean I usually end up doing a lot of cropping and try to tighten things up because I have a tendency to spread things out and show too much. Ah well
