Description First of all: No, this is not an icon for Photoshop...

This is a more recent attempt of mine at creating a logo for myself featuring my own initials. Even though it may look more like an icon, rather than a logo, it was definitely a good exercise for me. Everything you can see was created in Illustrator by me, including the letters/font I created just for this

Edits

Edit 1: A couple of small changes... The pencil's lead is darker now and a tad blunt. I have also made the metallic part holding the eraser less thick. The paper is practically the same except for a thin white line that I have added.

On top of this, I have also edited the e in my font. This was the main reason for me not to mark this as a minor edit. Seeing as I am considering to make a full custom font, I am hoping to get some feedback on it in it's current state.

Edit 2: I've completely redesigned the piece of paper and gave it a nice fold. The image still only consists of vectors. I also have been working on the font and here's a very early preview: [link]

Edit 3: I've changed the pencil's metallic part now. This should be my last update

Thanks, it is only my second icon ever and the first one I made in Photoshop. I'm sure there's room for improvement but everyone has to start somewhere

Thanks, I still want to remake the metal part of the pencil though... I think after that I'll finally be happy with it Seeing as I'll probably never use it as a logo myself, I could always upload it to the icon section later on Hopefully I'll finish the font too one day... It's just so much work, dammit

Honestly, a font can take several months to make,

Look at my link in the description, I already drew all the lower case letters Converting it into a proper font just takes a lot of work and a very long time, though. Besides, I've been working on different things every day lately I can't finish everything at once though

EnzuDes1gn In reply to eggy [2010-02-24 06:39:28 +0000 UTC]

nuff excuses bish, just finish it

I deal currently with about 3 clients a week, that 3 whole websites a week, and i work two normal jobs, as well ... lol

eggy In reply to EnzuDes1gn [2010-02-24 13:41:52 +0000 UTC]

Lol, I would love to finish it, don't get me wrong. I'm just trying to figure out how to use the software intended for creating fonts at the moment. I've downloaded a FontLab demo but seeing as I've never used any software like this before, it takes quite some getting used to.

Normally I prefer figuring things out myself until I learn them the hard way, that's the best way of learning in my opinion. In this case, however, I'm going to look for some tutorials or basic information behind the creation of fonts. I don't want to make an entire font and then find out I've done everything completely wrong and have to start all over again

If drawing the actual letters in Illustrator would be all I had to do, if only, I could finish a rough version pretty quickly. Unfortunately, it's not that easy

So, anyway, how is your progress coming along using Illustrator?

I've already made some changes now. Maybe the metallic bit still needs a tiny bit of shine but I'll leave it like this for now. Making it thinner already made it look a bit more realistic

I tend to get around the pentool, by using epilitcal shape tool , it's more messing about etc, but thats what I do

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

eggy In reply to EnzuDes1gn [2010-02-21 13:54:13 +0000 UTC]

Using the shapes tool is a good way to start, in my opinion. It allows you to easily create shapes with perfect curves, the correct dimensions and the proper proportions. Seeing as I like to work in an exact way, I personally use them as well quite regularly. By merely adding and subtracting shapes (and by rotating and skewing them), you can get quite far

While Illustrator may be more powerful, creating vectors is actually easier to do in Illustrator than it is in Photoshop. On the first day that I used Illustrator, without any prior experience with vectors, I was already able to create my own avatar as a vector. I did so only by adding and subtracting shapes in order to create a perfect final shape. Other logos, I had to do freehand seeing as only using shapes would have been nearly impossible, this one for instance: [link] When using Illustrator, you should add the Pathfinder toolbox to your workspace though, makes life much easier in my opinion. Of course, you can always ask me if you have questions

You may have probably already seen this tutorial btw, but in case you haven't it's well worth a read:

Very nice work.

And your own font is pretty impressive. Though as you remark letter spacing may still need some work.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

eggy In reply to d37nu1l [2010-02-18 10:12:55 +0000 UTC]

If you cover the d & e with your fingers, the spacing doesn't look too bad. It's mainly the e that seems to be the problem...
