Raphael has become something of a mystery to most of the War-Forged. Rumours float around of cultists, fires, death and deceit but no one can fully pin it on him. As a result from the rumours however most of the War-Forged who have heard about him do not trust him and he finds it difficult to deal with most of them. They tend to mysteriously raise their sale prices around him or, in some cases, outright deny him the right to purchase items off of them. Raphael doesn't tend to push the matter further than a few harsh words however, as he has long come to the conclusion that he cannot change their minds. But if you were to sit down and have a conversation with him, you might find that Raphael is well spoken and polite. He laughs easily and brushes off words of hate thrown his way. He is observant and rarely misses a beat. While you might think he prefers to be alone due to his current life style it is far from the truth. Raphael is sociable and when given the opportunity enjoys a good conversation. He has all sorts of stories but will skirt around the truth of the rumours that are told of him like a skilled politician might.
Despite all that has happened to him, Raphael still holds a sense of deep loyalty to his herd and if asked he will try his hardest to lend a hand wherever he can. He has learned to be careful where he places his trust however and isn't as impulsive as he once was. He thinks things through as thoroughly as he can, being as logically minded as possible. It takes a lot to ruffle his feathers and he blocks out a lot of the anger he holds very deep inside of him. It's hard to say if he has learned to deal with the deep sense of loss and sadness he holds deep within him, but you would never see him whine or talk to anyone about it. At night he dreams of terrible things though, some are memories of his past that have become warped over time and others are just there to cause him pain. Raphael doesn't sleep very well, so he has taken up reading and has become particularly fond of poetry. He is a skilled hunter and knows his animals just as well as he knows his weapons.
Additional:
- Raphael was taught to read by his Mother.
- In his spare time he enjoys writing, though it's most likely illegible to anyone but him.
- Hates cultists with a burning passion. Always has what-ifs in the back of his mind.
- Wants to do good, doesn't want anyone else to experience the pain he felt.
- Loves a good chat, just doesn't like to get too close. Arms length is best.
History:
It was widely believed that Raphael was not War-Forged born, despite him having family within the herd. Some thought that he was a vagabond of some kind like a thief or in some cases a cultist. Most seemed to insinuate that he was plotting against the War Lord but those were far stretched rumours. Not one of these claims made against him have been proven true and when asked Raphael tends to answer depending on what he thinks they might want to hear. His answers vary so widely that it is hard to pin point the truth. But as much as Raphael is a raider, he has found an uncanny enjoyment in writing. While you might never read it while he is alive, he has began a journal of his life events. If no one would listen to him speak, he figured he would just write it down for an unwitting War-Forged in the future to find.
Raphael was indeed War-Forged born. His family was small and largely unknown. They were quiet enough that few knew outside of neighbours and the odd equine here or there knew much about them. Judith and Lowan both owned a small plot of land situated on the outskirts of the farmland region. They struggled from season to season to survive the harsh environment of Onea, attempting and almost always failing to meet their expected quota each year. Kaia often threw unwanted challenges their way that set them back, made them lose crops, lose the few apana's they had traded for in an attempt to try something new. It was always a struggle and those who did know this family believed that they were marked with bad karma. Those who had anything to do with them also found themselves having an unusual bout of bad luck, only adding to the suspicions the few War-Forged who knew them had about them. Judith and Lowan remained very devout to Kaia through all of this hardship, if only in the hopes that Kaia might finally turn things around for them. It was tough going at times but eventually, it did work out. On a particularly good year, Judith and Lowan decided they would finally try for a foal. It didn't take them very long before Raphael was conceived and they believed their run of bad luck was finally beginning to go away. They thanked Kaia profusely. After Raphael was born things started to improve for the small family. Raphael grew strong and worked hard on the farm alongside his Father and Mother. Things were going so well that Judith and Lowan soon tried for another foal and were gifted with another beautiful colt. With two sons working hard on the farm, everything seemed to go a bit smoother.
As a teenager Raphael left the farm to begin training as a raider. Thanks to the years of farming, Raphael was a step ahead of those he was training with in terms of strength and stamina. He could haul a full cart without breaking a sweat and proved to be good muscle back up. That being said he wasn't the most popular among his peers as stories followed him of his families untold misfortune. Some firmly believed that Raphael would only bring that bad luck with him on raids, despite him having not had a run of bad luck for years. When training went wrong, Raphael was to blame. When someone got hurt, Raphael was to blame. Raphael copped a lot of slack for his so-called bad luck and it was frustrating for Raphael to prove otherwise. No matter what he said or did, even if he didn't do anything wrong, Raphael was the punching bag. He had little to no friends growing up and he found he was always the butt end of 'hilarious' jokes. It only made him meeting Triston all the more special.
When Raphael was eighteen he banded together with a group of War-Forged Raiders to train and go on raids with. Some were new just like he was and others were experienced with many raids under their belts. The raiders from this group were from all over Onea, some he knew and others he had never seen before. There was one raider in particular who stood out from the rest and immediately drew Raphael's eye. The unusually light built War-Forged didn't look like much to begin with, but as Raphael would soon find out, Triston was far more skilled then he might have guessed when first looking at him. Where Raphael was strong, Triston was fast. Where Raphael had the stamina, Triston had the agility. They both were evenly matched when they sparred together for the first time, neither would win or lose but some of the raiders group would see potential in them both as a team. Through unspoken agreement they would be paired up and be made into a team. Having few friends growing up Raphael was awkward and shy around the other stallion but Triston either didn't notice this, or didn't care. The slender stallion broke down Raphael's walls of insecurity and a friendship was born. Seeing it as fundamental to their group Raphael and Triston became nearly inseparable. The better they knew each other, the better they could work as a team. It was no surprise when their bond grew further then friendship and while they never openly spoke about it, the group accepted them both with no qualms. They would be inseparable and made a decent team. Any raid or mission they would do together and were far more effective as a team then they were on their own. For many years it was like this, they were happy and worked very well but all good things must come to an end.
One night Raphael woke up to a fidgeting Triston. The slender stallion obviously hadn't gotten much sleep and was pacing back and forth. Raphael asked him what was wrong when Triston gave him a nervous look that instantly had Raphael on edge. He asked him what was wrong, but got no answer from the other stallion. It seemed Triston was too frightened or nervous to speak and instead motioned for Raphael to follow him outside. Confused and on edge, Raphael did just as his beloved asked and followed him into the night. Raphael tried to get the other stallion to speak to him, but Triston refused. It wasn't until Raphael could see multiple camp fires scattered throughout the forest that he stopped. They were on the border of Onea, those camp fires might contain War-Forged but they could also house other unwanted equines. Refusing to go any further Raphael demanded that Triston tell him what was wrong and what happened next would stay with him forever. Triston tried to speak, explaining something about there being another god, he wouldn't say which god he was referring to and Raphael tried to press the matter but Triston dodged it and continued. Triston said he was in danger, that Raphael might be as well which caused more tension between them. It was a frustrating back and forth, Triston not giving him much information as to why they were here. Raphael had an inkling but he didn't want to trust it. He wanted to trust Triston. He needed to. Shadows emerged from the forests around them and Triston grew more nervous finally saying something about joining them. Joining them? Triston already had Raphael, what more could he want or need? The shadows formed into equines and Raphael grew tense. He'd left his weapon back by their camp and they were beginning to be out numbered. "Well Triston?" One of the shadows called. "Have you done it, is he joining us?" Their voice was silky smooth and sharp as any sword. Triston stammered something about needing more time and Raphael couldn't quite grasp what he was hearing nor could he understand it. He didn't want to understand it. "No more time, you've had plenty of it." The shadows moved quick and Triston tensed but it was too late and they were greatly outnumbered. Raphael tried to defend Triston but he had a difficult time defending himself from the onslaught of strikes of various equines. "Kill him," was the last thing Raphael heard before he hit the ground and blacked out.
Raphael awoke bloodied and sore. He was in the middle of the forest and it was day. He rose to his hooves and barely managed to stay on them as he heard hoof beats behind him. Shouts of alarm made him tense but he needed not worry for the equines that came for him where some of his own comrades. "Triston, w-where is he?" Raphael asked, swinging his head around, looking for the familiar stallion but not seeing him anywhere. His comrades didn't know. They'd been busy themselves defending their camp from a group of cultists. At the mention of cultists Raphael felt his stomach drop, but he ignored it. There was no way. As soon as Raphael was able to, he set out to find Triston, wherever the stallion might be.
For months Raphael searched for Triston. He found traces here and there but not what could be considered a solid lead. It wasn't until one evening that Raphael was at the Kingfisher Inn, scribbling down notes in his journal when for the first time since that night he lay eyes on his beloved. Scrambling from his seat, pushing past annoyed customers he rushed to lift the cloak that hide Triston's face from him and was immediately taken aback by what he saw. Triston was much thinner, he had more scars on his face then before and even one had rendered him blind in one eye. Raphael let the cloak fall and Triston gave him a tired look. "I'm sorry," was the first thing he said. "I'm so sorry." Raphael was too stunned to speak, his mouth dropped open, trying to find the words and something that sounded roughly like "why?" finally came out. "I-I couldn't do it. They wouldn't let me...I tried, oh I tried. I couldn't leave, I'm so sorry." Triston spoke and it confused Raphael even more, even though a part of him already knew what had happened. "I didn't do it, the fire. T-they did. I'm sorry." Fire? What fire? Raphael questioned him profusely, finding his voice more and more until finally the story began to click into place. Triston had been indoctrinated into the cult at a young age. As a way to prove his loyalty and to test his effectiveness as a cultist, he'd been sent to infiltrate the War-Forged ranks and to become one of them. It had worked very well, too well in fact as Triston grew very close to Raphael. When it was obvious that Triston had become too involved with his 'job', the cultists came to take Triston away. Triston tried to bring Raphael back, but before he could try and convince Raph, the cultists had come and attacked. Triston had been the one to knock Raphael out, claiming to have killed him when at most he'd made a few cuts so Raphael would be covered in blood. Upon his return to the cultist clan, Triston had been interrogated thoroughly. They tortured and abused him, getting every single little detail they could out of him. Everything. Even the location of Raphael's family farm. "What fire?" Raphael hissed to Triston as he finished, fear and anger and hurt gripping him like a vice. "The fire at your farm. I'm sorry, I didn't tell them. I didn't do it, please forgive me." This Triston was not the stallion he had fallen for. This Triston was scared, weak and spoke words Raphael couldn't believe. "There has been no fire," Raphael said and the pitiful look Triston gave him made his heart clench tight. "You don't know..." Triston looked horrified. "I'm sorry, I can't stay. Don't look for me. Please." The stallion got up to leave, but before he could Raphael grabbed him by the scruff of his neck and slammed him into the wall. Fear, anger and the months of stress flowed through him. They were getting looks from the other patrons, but Raphael didn't care. "If any of my family is hurt because of you, I will find you and I will kill you." Raphael let go, Triston slumped down to the floor and before anyone could approach him Raphael was gone.
The longest journey of his life ensued and it would lead to a very disappointing end. There indeed had been a fire at his home and as far as anyone could tell, they were all dead. No one had survived it, at least that is what he was told and that is what he saw. Going through the ruins though he never did find any remains, but he finally put that down to the fire being that devastating. With no one left for him Raphael returned to the Kingfisher Inn where he would not see Triston's face again. From there he met up with a group of Vindicators, Raphael was cautious at first but he soon began to ask questions and upon liking what he heard Raphael decided to join. He figured he could do better being a vindicator rather than a raider and knew that there would be a chance he might stumble across some lowlife cultists while he was at it.
