Description
Jesus Is Risen!1Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to look at the grave. 2And behold, a severe earthquake had occurred, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled away the stone and sat upon it. 3And his appearance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow. 4The guards shook for fear of him and became like dead men. 5The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid; for I know that you are looking for Jesus who has been crucified. 6“He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying. 7“Go quickly and tell His disciples that He has risen from the dead; and behold, He is going ahead of you into Galilee, there you will see Him; behold, I have told you.”

Beautiful work! But I never have been able to figure out why Angels always have wings. I never noticed a scriptural reference for that, aside from the Cherubim on the Ark of the Covenant (are those actually angels?).
Ah, I guess I'm getting a bit sidetracked. Nevermind. I have really enjoyed this little series though.

"Then I looked up—and there before me were TWO WOMEN, WITH THE WIND IN THEIR WINGS! They had wings like those of a stork, and they lifted up the basket between Heaven and Earth.
“Where are they taking that basket?” I asked the angel who was speaking to me. He replied, “To the country of Babylonia to build a house for it. When the house is ready, the basket will be set there in its place.”

The term "Angel" comes from the greek word Angelus, which means "Messenger":
In the context of Christian Theology, by extension, the term "Angel" can be applied to ANYONE of the Heavenly Beings. The Cherubim... the Ophanim... the "Bene Ha-Elohim"... the Seraphim.... and so on.

As Angel means messenger, it can actually refer to earthly beings as well, though it's not primarily used that way (Malachi 2:7 uses the same Hebrew word "Malak", messenger to describe the responsibility of priests, and the elders of the seven churches in revelation are called angels as well), so it's true that it describes a pretty wide category.
Still, always thought it interesting that Biblical encounters with angels are so often illustrated with wings, despite there being no wings mentioned outside of highly symbolic references (such as prophetic dreams and the symbolic representations in the art of the tabernacle and temple). In fact, sometimes Angels are even mistaken for ordinary people at first (see Lot, Abraham, Mary & Mary in Mark 16:5, Samson's mother in Judges 13:3+11), so at that point at least they must not have looked dramatically different from ordinary people. I suppose angels can pretty much appear however they need to, but people almost always opt for the winged version.
Funny, I haven't seen many people represent angels as an accurate depiction of the description of the cherubim...with four faces; a man, a lion, an ox and an eagle, and FOUR wings, calves feet and they were the color of burnished bronze (Ezekiel 1), though I really do think that description was for the sake of symbolism, not for a literal description of a heavenly being. Still, I would LOVE to see an artists rendition of the descriptions in Ezekiel 1. It's kind of hard to even picture.

In the recently-released videogame Castlevania: Lords of Shadows 2, their Angels present a very interesting design. Satan´s depiction is heavily based in the Book of Ezekiel, that according to some authors, alludes to the fact that Satan / Lucifer was a Cherubim before his Fall.
He is presented as a half-animal, half-human Angel, with a monumental human torso and the legs of an Eagle (one of the animals present in a Cherub´s faces). The lower section of his body is forged from Black Gold:

Keep in mind that the Cherubim are only a specific kind of angels... since there are many more kinds of heavenly beings described in the judeo-christian tradition: the Ophanim, the Seraphim, the Bene-Ha-Elohim (the famous "Sons of God" mentioned in the book of Genesis and the biblical Epistle of Jude... the angels who get frisky with human females, hehe!), the Archangels, and even some specific "Giant Angels" mentioned in Talmudic & non-canonical literature (like Metatron, Af the angel of the Divine Anger, and Samael, the Angel of Death).
The depiction of Angels with wings is mostly a cultural thing. Since Angels were associated with Heaven since antiquity, it became normal for artists to picture them as winged fellas. Also, remember that Angels were taken by Jews from the Zoroastrianism, during the Babylonian Captivity (587 - 540 a.C.). And in that religion, the "Divine Beings" serving the One and True God (known as AHURA - MAZDA) were always depicted with wings and feathers... lOl

Yeah, I find it interesting to look at the traditions that influence Christian imagery (the amount of greek and roman traditions that got mixed in is pretty astounding), but the Biblical illustrations I like best are the ones that stick most closely to the source, still you gotta have some creative license right? I am loving Eikonik's connection to the "He makes the winds His messengers,Flaming fire His ministers." reference in this case.

For a deeper study of the Angelic Beings, you must study the Interstamental Literature: the books written after the Torah was compiled (540 b. c. e..), but before the first books of the "New Testament" were produced (60 c. e.).
1 ENOCH (200 b. C.), the ASSUMPTION OF MOSES (100 b. C.), and the BOOK OF JUBILEES (300 b. C.) (being Jubilees and 1 Enoch part of the modern biblical canon of the Ethiopian Church)are the major responsible sources for our modern concept & imagery about the Heavenly Hosts.
