Dreamscape Tutorial

I'm going to try to show you how to create a dreamscape with only two stocks and I say : “I'm going to try“ because it's the first one and
I do not have experience in doing tutorials, therefore, I apologize by advance if I make mistakes in grammar or anything else.

The decision to make this tutorial has been very thoughtful because it takes time and lately,
I'm overworked but I have received so many requests, that I finally decided to make my watchers happy. So here is my first attempt.

Things you will need

I have to warn you that the final process that I apply to my work is more laborious
than only working on the adjustments and on the photo manipulation in itself,
because it is only at the end of my process that my work takes shape thanks to the brushes work.
In fact, my digital painting metamorphoses all and gives my style.

You need an intermediate knowledge of Photoshop and especially the tools and settings.

I assume that you know how to load brushes, adjust images on your canvas and use the tools, mask etc.
For this reason, I do not say how to do it and I focus on the creative process only.
I'm going to avoid using a complicated technique to make it easier for you.

To create this dreamscape, you need two stocks : they will be blended together, while the rest will be painted.
For the brushes, I always use Kyle's ones. You can find them on the Adobe page .

Forget the "erase tool" to blend images.
My works are not simply “copy and paste“. The mixing process is very laborious.
if you want to get a good result, FORGET to use Topaz filter!
It is the worse thing you can do to your creation, it “destroys“ the quality of an image.

A small number of Kyle’s brushes are readily available in the Brushes panel.
You can access even more of his brushes straight from the app.

In the Brushes panel flyout menu, select Get More Brushes.

Steps
1
  • Create a canvas of 2724 x 4092 pixels (Image size)
  • Click on the image to see it better.

    2
    Place the image on the canvas and adjust it.
    You should have the stock stored on your computer, otherwise,
    in this tutorial you will find the links or directly from my stash by clicking on the thumb.

    3
    Duplicate the background layer.
    We will work with this second layer.

    4
    Place the second stock on the canvas and adjust it.

    In this work,  we will not cut the two stocks, but we will blend both.
    We have two options:

    a) Blend brush

    Blur the bottom with the Kyle blend brush, with these settings:

  • b) A mask

  • Put a mask on the sky layer and paint in black to remove the bottom,
    and if you make a mistake, go back and paint in white.

    Black to remove it.

    White to recover it. (Use it in case you make errors)

    5

    We go on working the second stock to create the sky.
    After erasing the bottom part, we will blend both stocks with the blending brush.

    6

    Now, we duplicate the background layer again and place it above the second stock.
    Then we apply a Gaussian blur to the layer.
    Radio: 112.90 pixels and the "normal" layer with opacity at 25%

    7
    We apply adjustments: Curves (Such as shown on the screenshots, and as desired).

    In this tutotial, I am not gathering my layers into groups to make it easier, especially for beginners
    but I organize my layers in all my works. You are free to do it and if so, it will not affect the work.

    8
    Add a light, it can be a sun or anything that is bright.
    You can place a sun from a stock (free choice) or paint it as I did.
    To use in all my works, I have ready in png painted objects like moons, suns, etc.

    To paint the sun, you can choose a typical brush, a rounded one with soft edges and blend with Kyle brush like i am used do, or u can put a stock there.
    If you choose a stock, remember to gently blend it so it looks more natural.
    The layer of the sun, place it as you see it in the image.

    9
    We return to the layer of the sky and correct small errors,
    some remnants of layers in the part of the sky that is on the trees (remains),
    Remember the use of masks or blend brushes. Do not use the erase tool directly.
    If it's easier for you, then use a mask. I usually blend directly, it's faster for me.
    I always work with brushes and graphic tablet.

    10
    We select the background layer and start with the color adjustments.
    Settings ----> Color balance
    We will balance the color between the background and the sky.

    We adjust the following values. Of course, you can choose other settings.
    Everything will depend if you prefer cold or warm.

    Cyan =  +32
    Magenta =  -14
    Yellow =  +19

    11
    We duplicate the sky layer and we apply a Gaussian blur on it, radio 4.5 px.

    Zoom to see if some parts are still not well blended (brush always, no erase tool).

    12
    The color is the most important part of my work and of all my works.
    It is in the color where complexity is radiate, or at least for me.
    We create a new layer and fill it with blue
    (you can choose the color you want, it depends on the result you want to obtain)

    Layer = Screen and 66% opacity.

    13
    Time to add birds and give our work "movement"

    We create a new layer "birds" or, you add a stock. It's up to you.
    I have chosen brushes.

    It is a distant view, therefore you have to take the perspective into account.
    Do not add large birds in the distance!

    Final color adjustments
    Finally, we click on settings ----> Color balance
    and we mix these values:

    Medium tones

    Cyan =  +30
    Magenta = -22
    Yellow = -9

    TIPS
    You can add fog directly, with a brush or a stock, and blend it with the rest of the background.
    Layers: softlight or screen.

    Also,
    I always paint. I blend the clouds and the trees, using Kyle's brushes. It's a personal choice.
    I will show you my two versions, without painting the trees and my final artwork, with trees and clouds painted on the stocks.
    I have done all this in a final layer (coupled) and a single copy. I can always remove it if I do not like the final result.

    Version, unpainted trees:

    and my ARTWORK, painted:
