Description This is a fantastical Emu Egg Rattle that I made a while back. You can order these eggs already blown out from various suppliers. I first applied a polymer clay (Premo metalics) technique to the egg, baked it, wet sanded it with many grades of sand paper and then buffed it on a machine buffer with a muslin wheel to a very high shine. I then sculpted this face from Cernit (polymer clay) and beaded around it like a cabachon. When finished I permanently attached it to the egg. INSIDE the egg I put a whole lotta BB's for a very fun rattle sound. Of course I did that before I did anything else! LOL
Lastly she sits on a brass candlestick - I thought that made a pretty display.

Ok, once again, I have a poor photo. Sorry about that! I think I oughta just fire my photographer (ME) and hire another one! Hats off to all you folks who take such fantastic photos!

This totally rocks! It's a great idea and it's so well crafted. I really like the paint scheme. Excellent work!

Well, actually, the only part that is painted is the face... (blush). The rest is the colored polymer clay manipulated into a pattern, with lots and lots of wet sanding then buffed to a nice shine. I love that shine - LOL

Thanks so much for the Fav and the wonderful comments! I am flattered!

wow that's really cool, you just get every detail so perfect. I look at all the things you make and it makes me want to make things like that, and it makes me want to feel it and examine it closely and listen to it. and I love how you put together differant materials and elements so creatively.

Oh my! Thank you for the wonderful comment! I love to get lost in the "zone" when I create things and sometimes get carried away. I get so much pleasure when someone enjoys it as much as I do (insert "Happy Dance" here).

WOW! You did that texture on the egg? *___* i wanna see more! ^^ hope you can take more pics.
How did you learn all this? and besides you have a lot of talent

ElvinMoon In reply to runya-dim [2006-06-13 00:22:51 +0000 UTC]

It's all in the stacking and slicing! LOL
I learned mostly through books and friends. There are a lot of polymer clay guilds out there too and they are most helpful. As far as the sculpting goes, that is self-taught.
Here is a plethora of "free" instruction in how to acheive some of the really cool looks with polymer clay: [link]
Thank you again for the wonderful comments and ENJOY!

Fantastic! What a wonderful idea. Do you mind if I try something similar?
I never knew you could 'polish' polymer clay, I'll have to give it a go

About the photography, the only thing I can see wrong is the lighting. I find the best way to light pieces is to have the main light on one side (I just use a desk lamp or the sun) and on the other side use a piece of white matte cardboard or paper to bounce some light back onto the shadowed side. Some people use a mirror or a board covered in aluminium foil but I find the light from those a little harsh. Have some fun experimenting with lights until you get a feel for what works and doesn't.
Hope that helps.

Thank you for the wonderful comments!
I sure don't mind if you try this at all. It's fun to share! I have to warn you that there is much work in the sanding but once you have fondled sanded clay you won't be able to stop touching it! I am not kidding - lol
Once it is buffed, it is still soft and nice to touch, but it is not the same feel. Heck, it's worth it for that shine though! If you would like to see some of my other polymer creations you can have a look here: [link] There are several galleries so just scroll down until you find the polymer clay one, click on the photo and you are in. Click any photo in the gallery to make it bigger.
Thank you for the lighting techniques! Wow, this is going to make a big difference for me I am sure. I can't wait to try this.

Oh yeah, and if your 'main' light is too harsh or causing hard reflections, get some white cotton or gauze in a picture frame and put it between the light and the piece. Or move the light further away <-- doesn't work with the Sun. .

Fantastic!! Do you make the eyes also or use glass eyes?

ringbearer In reply to ringbearer [2006-06-15 01:31:51 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Never thought of using floor wax, although I have used car wax on my stained glass pieces to make them shine. Thank you again for your explanations. I'm on my way to check out your work on PBase.

ElvinMoon In reply to ringbearer [2006-06-13 00:41:40 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!
The eyes on this piece are sculpted and painted with acrylics and then I put future floor wax on them to make them shine. he he This was a commissioned piece for a very special friend.
I use glass eyes too which you can see on the Worm Charmer. I like using them too because they really make the piece come alive.

I'd imagine it would be! I love tiny things, so tiny beads are always so much fun to work with. Not to mention how fun it is to let them sift through your fingers when there's a large quantity of them.
