Description Sculpted in Polymer Clay. I used colored polymer clay for everything with the exception of the small purple spots on the fish face and body which I painted with acrylic. The eyes, all other spots, and the stripes on his tail are made using different canes of blended colors. I enjoy making the canes. The fish is built over a chicken egg and rattles (I always like to put something inside the eggs to make noise). The little fish rider is about 1.5" sitting and was built over a wire armature. His face reminds me of a Hun. He is removable.
I have some detail shots that show his face and the fish face better in my scraps.
I like this little sculpt

You looked at it all? wow - I am flattered! There are a whole lotta pictures in that gallery - LOL! If you want some pointers in the clay I will be happy to tell you what I know and send you some tutorial links as well. Just let me know.

Thanks!

Sweet! that would be VERY much appreciated! :c). I looked at EVERYTHING!lol. hehe. I especially loved the moons you made!

Yeah, I would definitely love to learn how to get started. This is something that really caught my attention.

I was looking for books online, but then I wondered how you've gone about it. Your work is absolutely amazing.

I didn't even know polymer clay existed! I thought all clay was just earth based.lol

Awww, I think the moonmen are still one of my favorite things that I have done.
It doesn't take much to get started with the polymer - it just depends on what you want to do with the clay. Sculpting is the least tool intensive - I use knitting needles, thin rocks, and dental tools - there is also this awesome tool called a clay shaper [link] it is shown half way down the page. If you want to achieve some of the techniques like mokume gane or faux ivory (examples only) you can roll the clay flat using a rolling pin, or jar but I highly recommend a pasta machine if you get "serious" about this stuff. It will save wear and tear on your hands and arms! lol
Here is an awesome link for "free" tutorials to get you started:

Thanks again for the wonderful comments and let me know how it goes for you!

Thanks!!! :c)

I read some select 'excerpts' and the sculpture was what caught my interest! i didn't realize how versatile this stuff was [abilitywise]. I could do anything with it.

Baking seems to be a weird concern of mine now.lol. Sculpting shouldn't be so bad.

I'll definitely let you know how it turns out. :c). Thank you so much! and you're welcome.:c)

Glad you liked! and baking is no problem - bake at 250 degree F - 15 minutes for every 1/4" of clay
Not to be a clay snob but sculpey would be my "never use it" choice for clay because it burns easily and it is NOT durable. Your beautiful creations will crack and break with the slightest fall when baked and your piece will be ruined. I don't care for FIMO SOFT either because I have had that crack (on numberous occasions) in the oven - very irritating! FIMO Classic is great and my clay of preference due to it being very durable but you will need some strong, warm, hands to get it moving. The other clay I prefer, is a little more expensive, and I use it solely for figure type sculptures and faces now, is ProSculpt. Easy and fast to work with, has a good finish when baked, and is strong. This clay only comes in shades of flesh, white, black, and translucent. If you need a clay that is relatively soft and still has good strength once baked, I would use Premo -available in all colors and has the best metallics on the market. Kato Klay is a new comer and another nice brand. It is EXCELLENT for making canes because it will hold its shape when you are working with it and stays stiff enough to make smooth, clean slices. Cernit is another clay that I love, is easily softened and has the most beautiful, almost translucent quality after baking BUT if your hands are very warm (like mine) then your sculptures will tend to wilt and melt right before your eyes. So, when I work with this clay I do a lot of quick, little strokes, to manipulate it and let it cool in between touches. AND lastly - you can mix ANY of these clays together to create a clay that is right for you. You can mix any of the colors together to create your own pallette. You can mix the metallic colors with the flat colors if you want to tone down the metallic portion of the clay. It's up to you. Plus, using colors eliminates the need for painting and there are so many effects you can acheive with them. The biggest thing to do is experiment and try different things. Also, my advice may be good but do some testing and see what conclusions you come to regarding the different clays AND have fun!
Holy Cow, I have rambled on! Hope you don't mind.

I don't mind at all!! You're the experienced one, and I'm learning from you! It's good, because you know your stuff!! :c)

I think I will go with Fimo classic then. I was considering Sculpey, but after i read many facts that it burns, and you said it, too, then I won't go with sculpey.

I'm really excited to get started on sculpturing.

Do you know anything about puppen? I saw something on it, but I wasn't sure if you worked with it or not.

Oh i just adore this sculpture, it's so whimsical, fanciful, with the most wonderful mix of colors/textures!

btw, i've used Polymer clay also! i use it because i don't have a way to fire clay in a kiln, so the oven will do.

Congratulations on receiving a DD on this!

beautiful work
I donΒ΄t know what kind of material is polymer clay. Could you tell me if it's like "fimo"?
thanks!!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ElvinMoon In reply to meritxell-m [2005-10-21 22:14:36 +0000 UTC]

That's exactly what it is - Fimo! The fish is sculpted almost entirely out of Fimo with a little Premo thrown in so I could get a nice metallic luster. The littel Sea Sprite riding him was sculpted in Cernit and has Fimo/Premo clothing. The fish is made over a chicken egg. I tend to do that a lot - use eggs as structures.

THANKS so much for asking and commenting on my work
