Description
"That one... was mine!"Danni's nostrils flared like those of an angry wolf as she snarled at the red and black figure. The mandroid lay still on the ground by the badly damaged car, little sparks jumping from its wrecked frame.
The figure just stood there, eyes scanning the surroundings quite clearly, even under the small hood. Slender, nimble, a bit shorter than Danni. And with the strangest pink hair. Something told her that this was not some typical agent of anyone.
"Rogue...", Danni mumbled under her breath, with a mix of disdain and wrry in her muffled voice. Rogues were bad news. The dumb ones went crazy and utterly destructive, gladly tearing down half a city block out of simple spite. The smart ones were even more dangerous.
"If it was yours," said the figure, throwing back the hood. The pink hair fell around her grinning face, with a ponytail, big bow and all, flopping out behind the head. "... then why was it still alive?"
She stomped on the sputtering mandroid with her long, odd stick. Whatever the knob at the end of the stick was made of, it had torn through the face of the mandroid like someone beating the crap out of a stick of butter with a red-hot hammer!
"You made a mistake, you know," said the figure, still keeping half an eye on the mandroid, making sure it did not do a movie villain rebound and suddenly spring to life for one last attack. Danni looked at her, eyes half squinting in both anger and thought. Arrogant, skilled, stylish. This rogue might not be one of the dumb ones. That might be a problem.
"If you're gonna go solo, don't be part of a team. If you're part of a team..." The figure, the girl in red and black with the pink ponytail and long fighting stick, swirled the stick around a few times like a baton. "... don't leave them behind."
Danni straightened up. This rogue seemed like a talker. Danni was not going to let her guard down, but being in a constant fighting stance seemed like overdoing it. With a delicate move, she hopped down from the battered car's roof and landed elegantly in the street.
"I think I can handle these few tin cans," she said with an arrogant tone. If this was a talk-off, she was not going to let this stranger have all the fun! To her surprise, the stranger sighed, deeply.
"I wasn't worried about you, I was worried about..." At that very moment, cutting through the stranger's words, Danni's comm went on.
"Ma'm, I think we're..." Static filled her ears for a second. "... this way, but maybe in the..." It was Xanthippe, but she kept cutting out, static overpowering the connection. "Come again, team," said Danni, never letting her eyes off of the stranger. It took a few seconds for a reply to get through.
"Ma'm, outlook does not look good. We have ...... Pilot is still trying to ........ probably safe, but the delay will be ...... "
The stranger seemed unnervingly calm, looking at Danni as if nothing had happened. Even the staff was relaxed in her hand, the knob-less end resting on the surface of the street.
"I told you. Go solo, or stay with your team."
Danni felt a weird frustration bubble up inside of her. This rogue clearly knew something, something she, Danni, needed to know. But instead of plainly telling it, she was playing games, and it made Danni boil inside! Rogues had no loyalties, no disciplines, no code to follow. Reckless, shortsighted, chaotic. A constant danger to the stability of....
"Mac," said the stranger, nodding at Danni. "Well, Macayet, but who has time for long names, amirite?" She seemed a bit annoyed at her own words, as if she, like Xanthippe, disliked having her name shortened for the convenience of others. However, she also seemed practically minded enough to accept that people just did that.
"D...." Danni stopped herself. A casual greeting was easy to just do as an instinctive response, but she had no idea who this character was. "Deidre," she lied. "Call me Dee."
Skidding tires could be heard, not far awway. The other cars! Danni turned to look down the street, and sure enough, two cars came racing around the corner. How this car had gotten so far ahead of them was beyond her, but it had made it an easy target. It had gone solo, leaving its team behind, a little voice nagged at her from the back of her mind.
"I've got this," said the stranger, this Macayet. She spun the staff a few times in her hand, like someone about to lead a marching band into bloody war, and then she went into a full sprint in two steps!
Danni stood for a while, looking in the direction of this odd rogue as she sprinted towards the two cars coming at her. A gunshot could be heard, and a flash seen from one of he cars. Danni thought she even heard the bullet whiz by her, not far from her head. But the next two shots convinced her that they were aiming at this Mac girl. The girl, meanwhile, was already just a black and red blob in the distance. The blob made a quick leap right, smacking into one of the cars, and shattering glasss could be heard from down there. She seemed to unnaturally stick to the car for a few seconds, making odd moves that apparently did a lot of damage. Hen the car went out of control, Macayet leaped off of it and into the air, and landed a bit awkwardly on the other, nearby car. Danni was not entirely sure, but it looked like the girl was hanging on to the sideview mirror, while she punched the knobbed staff through the side window and wriggled it around violently inside the car. The car immediately went out of control, and as it turned sharply left and flipped over, Macayet released her grip on it and tumbled along the street, finally coming to a rest in a kneeling psition a little bit from the flipped car. As she stood up, the car burst into flames, then exploded. Macayet stood there for a second, then ran into an alley and disappeared.
Danni remained standing in the street, a bit taken aback by all that had just happened. This was a weird person, and she had no standard procedure for dealing with it. Maybe that was her schtick. Be weird, confuse people. It was a good schtick. Still, one minor detail kept going through her mind, until she found herself unwillingly saying it out loud, to nobody but herself.
"Well... Explosions ARE always a good time to pose."
Then she turned and headed off to find the two girls with the orb.
