Why Is the Rum Always Gone?Just to prove I'm at least trying to work on this... oh well, not that I would have touched it many times so far... it's not much more than a couple of days' effort so far, really. It just mainly stays on my table untouched. And not a word about the bottle, I know it's... I won't say it. I don't drink, so I don't know how a bottle should look like. Or should I come up with a better excuse? Ok, it's honestly not finished yet. There hardly is any finished part in that whole drawing yet. I already could point out several things I hate about it... but too bad, I just cannot make any so big changes anymore.
The only reason I'm doing this... and why I still like it even a bit... is most likely because it at least looks somehow like the character it should be.

I was rewatching this series over the weekend and I adore how he is about the rum... it's always so funny. (come to think of it, that's one of the things I missed about the 4th one 
Your work is so beautiful, even unfinished. You pay such attention to details, and you captured that moment and his expression perfectly.

There was something missing from the 4th movie, I can't put my finger on exactly what it was but I guess it just missed some of the small inside jokes like that, not that it was altogether bad, captain Jack can never really fail, can he?
I guess I only cared to work on this as long as it took to get the expression there. I just wanted to see if it was manageable. Filling in the rest got too boring but I still rather like it, too, just as it is.

It'll be a miracle if I ever get around to finishing this... it's been so long. I was happy with the face but I could never find the time to produce the rest of it on the same level of detail. I rather have it this way than ruin it by trying to work on further without really giving it the amount of time it would need.

This is yet another of your amazing works and I don't see why you scrapped it. It's beautiful(to me at least). Looks just like him. How do you do that? Make the person your drawing look JUST EXACTLY like them..? It's an amazing gift, I believe. ^^

Actually I didn't scrap this... dA staff did.
I guess I could well move it back to my main gallery alongside with another drawing (Dole Horse) that will probably forever remain as some kind of WIP but is one of my most popular works (and got scrapped as well)... I have this bad habit of never finishing some drawings. That just happens because I cannot force myself to finish something I don't deel like working on.
Many people ask how I do that and I don't actually know. 
It's more difficult if I draw a face I'm not very familiar with but usually I spend so much time choosing a reference that the little features that make the person look like him-/herself start to become quite obvious. I'm also quite aware of what I can do and what I cannot do, and I keep that automatically in mind when I choose a ref. Of course I usually like to choose a ref with some element I'm not sure I can do because I like the challenge and chance to learn.
I guess I could ramble a lot about it without still being able to give any simple answer. In the end, I just draw what I want to draw. But while some people draw for example Johnny Depp or whoever just because of their looks, for me a portrait always starts with general respect or admiration for the person/character. I draw people/characters who I find somehow inspiring and I always try to get on the paper something at least a bit deeper than just their looks. Portrait isn't just a random picture of a human being, I think it should include something of their personality as well.

I like the idea of going back later and fixing mistakes one by one. I just fix things as I go along and a lot of the time I don't really like how my art turns out. I like the reference idea too though, and I myself use it a lot. References should be difficult, as they provide a challenge, and the bigger the challenge, the better you'll learn. And as soon as you've got something down, you can alter it and make it your own style. There are so many reasons to love art, but for me, that's one of the best reasons there is. Other than just the love and respect you need for art to even consider being an artist.
I also agree on the last bit. You shouldn't just draw something without any thought to it. If you are going to draw a specific character or person, show personality and the respect you have for that character or person.
If you look at the link I have provided at the bottom, you will see a character of mine who is like a dear friend to me. I don't just draw him just because I can anymore. The ideas I get for the drawings of him I have lying around my house, all have something to do with his personality and/or the things he's been through. Read the artist's comments on the picture and you'll learn all about him. If you'd like(and it would be greatly appreciated as well; from such a wonderful artist I could call it an honor) leave a comment. I would be in your debt forever, as that is the piece I am most proud of, though it may not be my greatest, I love this character and all he's worth.
